Pitru Paksha 2023: Who First Performed Shradh?
Pitru Paksha holds immense significance in Hinduism and it finds mention in the Hindu epic Mahabharata's chapter titled Anushashan Parva.

In this chapter, Bhishma Pitamah mentions the offerings made during Pitru Paksha. Bhishma tells Pandu's son Yudhishthir that first of all Atri Muni told Maharishi Nimi that by performing Shraddha of the ancestors in the Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month, the ancestors are pleased.

Although after death the body dissolves into five elements but the soul is immortal. That soul, under the spell of illusion, one day comes to earth to see its children. Those who have died are pleased if their offerings are made during Krishna Paksha on that date. After this, Maharishi Nimi offered prayers to his ancestors and became free from Pitru Dosha.

When Maharishi Nimi told this to other sages, other sages also started offering tarpan. After this it became a tradition. Since then, people started offering tarpan in the Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month due to which Krishna Paksha also came to be known as Pitru Paksha.
