Pitru Paksha 2023 Start Date And Time: Pitru Paksha is a 16-day period observed by Hindu families to pay homage to their deceased ancestors and seek their blessings. Also, known as Shradh Paksha and Mahalaya Paksha, it lasts from the full moon of Bhadrapada month to the new moon day of Ashwin month.
This year Pitru Paksha is starting on Friday, 29 September 2023 and it will continue till Saturday, 14 October 2023. There is a belief that the souls of the ancestors reside in Pitrulok and they descend on earth during these 16 days of Pitru Paksha. This
Year
1.
The
eldest
son
of
a
family
wakes
up
early
in
the
morning
on
this
day
and
then
bathes
in
water
to
cleanse
themselves.
2.
Shradh
karma
is
done
only
between
11.30
am
to
2.30
pm
and
only
after
that
take
blessings
of
the
elders
of
the
family
by
touching
their
feet.
3.
A
family
member
who
will
engage
in
puja
rituals
and
do
shradha
rites
would
dress
in
something
new
neatly
and
practice
celibacy
or
Brahmacharya,
or
else
ancestors
return
to
Pitru
Lok
in
anger.
4.
Then
an
ancestor's
image
is
placed
in
the
form
of
a
portrait
facing
south
on
a
wooden
table
before
performing
the
puja.
5.
A
pind
is
formed
in
the
shape
of
a
ball
from
ghee,
honey,
rice,
goat's
milk,
sugar,
and
barley.
6.
Then
Tarpan
is
done,
which
involves
mixing
water
with
flour,
barley,
kush,
as
well
as
black
sesame.
7.
Consuming
gram
is
prohibited
during
the
time
of
shradh
and
it
is
not
offered
to
ancestors.
8.
Whenever
water
is
offered
to
the
forefathers,
red
flowers,
milk,
kush,
and
black
sesame
are
added,
else
they
do
not
consume
it.
Also,
it
must
be
always
done
facing
south.
9.
When
the
Pitru
Paksha
continues,
food
is
taken
out
for
the
ancestors
and
fed
to
cows,
crows,
dogs,
ants,
and
a
Brahmin.
10.
Clothes
are
not
washed
when
Pitru
Paksha
shradh
goes
on.
11.
Family
members
engage
in
charitable
activities
and
make
donations
to
the
poor
and
needy
during
this
period
as
Pitru
Paksha
is
considered
a
period
of
penance.
12.
It
is
advised
to
stay
calm
during
this
period
in
order
to
receive
blessings
from
your
ancestors.
