It is necessary to offer water to your deceased ancestors or forefathers during Pitru Paksha as it is considered very auspicious. While giving water, you should make it drip from your thumb so that ancestors' souls remain in a state of bliss. There is a belief that the thumb is the ancestral place and hence this ritual is followed.

In Which Direction Offering Is Made While Sitting?
Family members who are doing tarpan should take all the ingredients and sit facing south direction. You can take water, Akshat, Kusha, black sesame, and flowers in your hands, join both hands and remember your ancestors. After this invite your forefathers to take this water.
