Pitru Paksha 2023: Pitru Paksha is also known as Mahalaya Paksha and it is a 16-day period to honor and show gratitude to the deceased ancestors by their family members. It falls during Krishna Paksha of the Bhadrapada month in the Hindu Calendar.

This year Pitru Paksha Shraddha has begun from 29 September and will continue till 14 October 2023. Rituals like Tarpan and Pind Daan are performed during this time while remembering the ancestors or forefathers. It is said that if the souls of the ancestors are happy, then family members witness progress, peace, and success in their lives; if the ancestors become angry, then the family members bear the consequence of Pitru Dosh, and obstacles come in their path. Therefore, observing Pitru Paksha is extremely essential.

Shaving hair, beard, or cutting nails during Pitru Paksha has always been prohibited. There is a story behind this practice, which will help you to understand this ritual better.

Bhishma once mentioned Pitru Paksha in the Anusandhan Parva of Mahabharata, which is an Indian epic. To please the ancestors, it is advised to perform Shraddha, Tarpan, and Pind Daan. It is also said that Pitru Paksha is a time of mourning and for the peace and salvation of the souls of our ancestors, one should adopt a simple lifestyle and engage in charitable activities.

Also, auspicious works such as housewarming, marriage, buying something new, or any religious and cultural events are not organized during this time.
