Navratri 2023: Day-Wise Rituals To Follow On 9 Days Of This Auspicious Festival

Navratri is a significant Hindu festival celebrated with great enthusiasm across India and the festival's name literally translates to 'nine nights', indicating the nine consecutive days on which it is observed. Goddess Durga or Shakti, in her different forms, is worshipped on these days. It celebrates the divine feminine energy and the triumph of good over evil.

The festival falls in the lunar month of Ashwin (usually in September or October) and this year it will be observed from 15 October to 24 October 2023. On the first day of Navratri, a Kalash (a sacred pot) is installed in the puja area, which is filled with water and adorned with mango leaves, coconut, and red cloth. It symbolizes the presence of Goddess Durga and the ritual is known as Ghata Sthapana.

Pratipada (Day 1)
This day is dedicated to Shailputri, an incarnation of Goddess Parvati. On this day, devotees perform puja, offer flowers, and recite mantras to honor her, get her blessings, and invite prosperity and fortunes into their lives.

Dwitiya (Day 2)
This day is dedicated to Goddess Brahmacharini, the second form of Goddess Durga. Devotees offer prayers with utmost devotion to gain penance, purity of soul, and good fortune in their lives.

Tritiya (Day 3)
This day is dedicated to Goddess Chandraghanta, the third form of the Goddess Durga. Devotees worship her for peace and tranquility, joy and wellness.

Chaturthi (Day 4)
This day is dedicated to Goddess Kushmanda, the fourth form of Goddess Durga, who is worshipped on this day. Devotees offer prayers for energy and strength.

Panchami (Day 5)
This day is dedicated to Goddess Skandamata, the fifth form of the goddess and the mother of Lord Kartikeya (Skanda). Devotees seek her blessings for motherhood, salvation, power, and protection.

Shashthi (Day 6)
This day is dedicated to Goddess Katyayani, who is the sixth form of the goddess, is worshipped. Devotees pray for courage and valor.

Saptami (Day 7)
On this day, devotees honor Goddess Kalratri, the seventh form of Goddess Durga. They seek her protection against fears and negative influences.

Ashtami (Day 8)
On this day, Goddess Mahagauri, the eighth form of the goddess is worshipped. Devotees pray for purity and a balanced life.

Navami (Day 9)
On this day, Goddess Siddhidatri, the ninth form of Goddess Durga is worshipped. Devotees seek her blessings for spiritual awakening and enlightenment.
