Kanwar Yatra 2023: Why Do Yatris Chant Bol Bam? Know The Legend Related To Lord Shiva
Kanwar Yatra begins in the month of Sawan or Shravan every year and it holds immense significance for the devotees of Lord Shiva. It is said that in this month when Lord Shiva bestows blessings on those who pray with utmost devotion. Yatris wait for the entire year for this journey that has immense spiritual significance.
Shiva temples are decked up across India, especially in the north around this time. During this month, devotees collect water from the Ganges or from any holy river with a Kanwar and perform anointment or Jal Abhishek of Shivling or Lord Shiva.

story
behind

Legend
has
it
that
Lord
Shiva
beheaded
Daksha
in
a
fit
of
rage
when
Mother
Sati
sacrificed
her
body
in
a
yagya
performed
by
King
Daksha.
After
this,
in
order
to
revive
King
Daksha,
Lord
Shiva
attached
a
goat's
head
to
him.
Lord Shiva liked the speech that came out of Daksha's mouth because of the goat's head being attached to the king and due to this, Bholenath's anger also subsids. As a result, Daksha's pride was shattered. This is the reason why Shiva devotees chant Bam-Bam Har-Har Bam-Bam, Bol Bam to please their beloved Lord. In the month of Sawan, to get the blessings of Mahadev, the kanwariyas definitely chant this.

in
the
month

Sawan
and
this
journey
is
a
difficult
one.
Kanwar
Yatris
walk
barefoot
for
many
kilometres
carrying
holy
water
on
their
shoulders.
According
to
the
Hindu
calendar,
Sawan
will
be
of
59
days
and
this
time
there
will
be
8
Mondays
in
the
month
of
Sawan.
This
Sawan
is
seen
every
19
years.
This
year
i.e.
in
2023,
the
month
of
Shravan
will
start
on
4
July
2023
and
will
continue
till
31st
August.
For encouragement, all the devotees complete their journey chanting slogans of Lord Shiva. Many times, due to exhaustion and lack of energy, the morale of the Kanwariyas starts breaking, but chanting 'bol bam' dedicated to Lord Shiva fills them with energy again, boose their morale and ultimately helps them to reach their destination.
