In India, our dietary practices are usually grouped under tamasic, Rajasic and sattvic dietary categories. Tamasic rajasic and sattvic categories are not applicable to only our dietary customs.They are also applicable to people and their personalities, and the gods we worship.

Ugra or ferocious forms, especially kali and jatamuneeshwaran are offered Tamasic prasad whereas Soumya or mild deities like Rama and Krishna are offered Sattvic prasad.

Tamasic prasad includes meat and fish whereas sattvic gods get their share of sweets, fruits, milk based and vegetable-based foods as prasad. Ugra gods mean havoc and destruction and hence they have to be appeased with tamasic prasad.

A Small village called Vadakkampatti in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, has a temple that conducts a 3-day annual festival for Lord Muneeshwaran the avatar of Lord Shiva.

At this juncture, the temple serves chicken and mutton biryani as prasad for which the devotees queue up, and consume. It is their viable alternative for breakfast.

Here these slaughtered goats are cooked in earthen pots and given back to the devotees as prasad. These events happen on Chaitra Navaratri and goat sacrifices are done in huge numbers.

A temple that distributes fish along with Toddy is dedicated to Lord Muthappan, who is a combination of both Vishnu and Shiva who incarnated in Kaliyuga.

Incinerated fish along with toddy is offered to Lord Muthappan as, by doing so, their wishes get fulfilled. This is distributed as prasad to devotees.

Kalighat temple for Kali in West Bengal, is dated back to 200 years. It is one of the shaktipeeths as well. Goats are sacrificed for the fulfilment of their wishes.

Kamakhya temple in Assam is where Maa Kamakhya is worshipped by Tantrics. Two bhogs are prepared to appease the Goddess. One is nonvegetarian food and the other is vegetarian food.

Both these bhogs are made without using onions and garlic, Goats are offered as as bhog and then cooked.
Fish is prepared like a chutney and then both these are offered to goddess between 1 to 2 pm. When this bhog is offered, the main doors of the temple are closed.

Birbhum has another temple namely Tarapith temple, which Durga devotees visit regularly. They offer meat with alcohol to Goddess and then distribute it amongst devotees.

Dakshineshwar Kali temple, made famous by Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, is yet another temple that serves fish as bhog to God and to devotees as prasad. But animal sacrifices are strictly not done in this temple.

Animal sacrifices used to be conducted in huge numbers previously in many temples. But now there are fewer occurrences of animal slaughter.
