Char Dham Yatra 2023: Interesting Spots To Visit Near Yamunotri

Yamunotri, is the originating point of river Yamuna. The first dham of Char Dhams Yamuna river has a historical background according to which Yamuna is the sister of Yama, the lord of death and hence she accords a painless death to anyone who takes a holy dip in her waters. There are a few sites in yamunotri which are worth seeing.

Surya Kund

The fact that this kund has been named after the Sun is indeed justified. It is a natural hot water spring named after the Sun, who is the father of Yamuna. Sun being a blazing entity, represents and personifies heat. A natural hot water spring is named after the Sun (Surya) God, father of Goddess Yamuna. Upon reaching yamunotri, everyone should bath in surya kund and then cook rice and potatoes by tying them in a cloth and hang it inside the boiling water so that the food gets cooked. The cooked food is offered when the Puja is conducted inside the temple, wherein a part of the offered food will be given back to the devotees as prasad.

Suryakund also has a legend behind it which says that Goddess Parvati used to take a holy dip here, and offered arghya to Sun. whenever the Sun is shining in the sky , at the same time, if the drops of water fall down into the kund, a rainbow is created every time. Morning is the best time to visit Surya Kund.

Divya Shila

Divya shila is a rock pillar close to the Surya Kind and it has to be worshipped before entering the Yamunotri temple.

Yamunotri Temple

A silver idol of Goddess Yamuna is installed in the sanctum of the Yamunotri temple.
Champasar Glacier- Chapasar Glacier, which is actually the originating point for yamunotri, lies a few kilometers away from the Yamunotri. It is really difficult to climb this area and not very convenient to trek all the way through, pilgrims return after praying and worshipping at Yamunotri.

Prakateshwar Cave

On the way between Barkot and Uttarkashi, you find this mysterious cave which is famous for its clusters of limestones that resemble a shivlinga. Ton the way to Gangotri, many pilgrims stop over and visit the Prakateshwar cave, Pilgrims, after completing the darshan of Yamnotri return b ack to Uttarkashi and then join the route that connects them back to the char dham journey.

Story Of Shiva Gufa

Shiv Gufa is a famous cave temple here, whose priest answers all the questions connected to the background of this place..In this village, years back in time, in June 1998, an irrigation project was undertaken within the village. Bhanu Prakash was also a committee member. There was a severe scarcity of water in the village and extensive search also had not yield any result. They dug the earth for 7 days but there was no trace of water anywhere in the vicinity.

But on one fine day, in a dream visitation of Lord Shiva , Bhanu Prakash heard that Lord Shiva would certainly appear in the form of water and the walls of the cave should be opened. Hearing which Bhanu Prakash woke up and did as he was told and water came gushing through the cave walls and the cave was named as Panchanan Mahadev Shiv Gufa (cave).

Other than Lord Shiva carving, you can also see pictures of Lord Ganesha, Panchmukhi Shivling, Parvati, Nandi, Crocodile, which are visible within rocks and most importantly water is flowing here ever since this visitation. This dark cave has a narrow entrance and four to five stairs to climb down into the cave.
