About River Yamuna

River Yamuna descended from Champasar glacier at an elevation of 4221 m above sea level, from a town which is now named as Yamunotri. It is a prominent town in Uttarakhand and a part of the Char Dham. The Yamunotri temple was built by Maharani Guleria of Jaipur and later reconstructed by Maharaja of Tehri. The idol of the goddess is made of silver and it is installed in the sanctum of the temple. The temple of Yamuna closes on the day of Diwali and opens again on Akshaya Tritiya.

Surrounded by the Garhwal Himalayas, Yamunotri is the most revered temple visited by millions. There is a particular ritual that everybody has to follow here at Yamunotri.

Divya Shila

Before stepping into the Yamunotri temple, one has to worship the Divya shila as it is known to be powerful and therapeutic. It is located just beside the temple which you have to worship compulsorily in order to wipe away your sins. The Divya Shila is located near the temple enshrining the river goddess. This holy rock was worshipped much before the temple was constructed as per legends and the tradition continues.

It is in close proximity to Surya Kund, Janaki Chatty, and Hanuman Chatti. Located near the Surya Kund of Yamunotri, Divya shila transmits a powerful vibration and piety around it, whichj is felt by the devotees who visit it.

You have to do a regular puja to the rock before you enter the temple. The devotees offer prayers at the Divya shila wherein they can see the hot spring of water from which the Yamuna trickles down. Water is very hot, bubbling and boiling. Although the trek to Yamunotri can be quite limb-numbing, it makes you forget your worries and cares. There are tour packages that are inclusive of Divya Shila as well, apart from Yamunotri.Despite its dangerously tough terrains which is a challenge to the experienced trekker, the visit is highly rewarding as it elevates you spiritually to a different level of awareness.
