When The Mind Unites With God

By Staff

God Consciousness, Short Story
The mind merges with the divine without worldly consciousness when united with it. A story from the Bhaktamala carries this truth.

Vilwamangal had lost himself to a prostitute and made regular visits to her. On the night on his parent's Shraddha ceremony, there was a delay in visiting her. At the culmination of the event, he carried some food cooked specially for the ceremony for his mistress. On his way to her house his mind was totally preoccupied with her that he stepped on a yogi who was in meditation. The Yogi was furious by the intrusion in his meditation and yelled at Vilwamangal for being so unconscious in his movements.

Vilwamangal begged his pardon but enquired how he could be conscious of the outer world while meditating on God, when he was unconscious of his movements while his mind was with the prostitute.

The sudden dawn of truth to Vilwamangal caused him to renounce the world for the pursuit of the ultimate. He told the prostitute, that she was his Guru who actually taught him the way to yearn for God. He then addressed her as his mother and gave her up completely while heading towards God consciousness.

Thus when the mind merges with the ultimate, there is actually no sign of it, as it dissolves its identity in it.
