Sweet Shakkarpara Recipe: How To Make Shankarpali At Home
Shakkarpara is a popular Maharashtrian sweet that is prepared during special occasions and festivals and is also a common snack with evening tea. Here is a detailed procedure with images and a video.
Shakkarpara is a sweet that hails from Maharashtra and is prepared during festivals and other celebrations. Also known as sweet shankarpali, this delicacy is prepared by deep frying the pieces of dough and coating it with powdered sugar or sugar syrup.
The shankara poli is a popular snack that goes well with evening tea and hence can be prepared during the normal, mundane days as well. The savoury counterpart for this sweet is the spicy shankarpali; the ingredients being slightly different.
This lip-smacking dessert is easy to make and is moderately time consuming to prepare at home. If you are interested in preparing this sweet at home, continue reading the step-by-step procedure with images. Also, watch the video recipe below.
SWEET SHAKKARPARA RECIPE VIDEO

Sugar - ¼th cup
Cardamom (elaichi) - 1 pod
Oil - 6 tbsp + for frying
Maida - ½ a bowl
Salt - ¼th tsp (optional)
Water - 8 tbsp

1. In a mixer jar, add sugar and elaichi.
2. Grind it into a powdery texture.
3. Then, heat 6 tablespoons of oil in a small pan.
4. Meanwhile, add maida in a bowl.
5. Add a tablespoon of the powdered sugar mixture.
6. Add salt and the hot oil; mix well.
7. Add water little by little and knead well into a medium-soft dough.
8. Rest it for 5 minutes.
9. Divide the dough into equal parts and roll a portion of it into a ball.
10. Flatten it into a roti using the rolling pin.
11. Cut it into vertical long strips and then cut across diagonally to form small diamond shapes.
12. Heat oil in a pan for frying.
13. Gently, drop the diamond strips one after the other.
14. Fry them on a medium flame, until they turn golden brown.
15. Allow these to cool for about 5 minutes, once these are taken off the stove.
16. Dust the remaining powdered sugar on them and mix well.
- 1. The addition of salt is optional.
- 2. The more you knead the dough, the softer and better it becomes.
- 3. The dough must be fried on a medium flame, if not the shankarpali will get burnt.
- 4. You can dip it in sugar syrup, instead of coating it with powdered sugar.
- 5. If you store them in an air-tight box and they will stay good for a few weeks.
