Unhealthy Diets, Sedentary Habits : What’s Behind Rising Constipation In Kids?

Constipation is often considered an issue affecting older adults. However, a concerning shift has been observed by medical professionals in Namma Bengaluru, where even infants as young as two years old are increasingly being diagnosed with constipation. Pediatricians warn that this troubling trend is primarily due to unhealthy dietary patterns, sedentary lifestyles, and lack of physical activity among children.

Poor Dietary Habits And Lack Of Fibre

Dr Ashok MV, Consultant Paediatrician and Neonatologist at Vasavi Hospitals said,

"Unfortunately, unhealthy dietary habits, excessive consumption of junk food, bread, biscuits, and rusks have made constipation a frequent concern among kids. Moreover, a lack of fibre-rich foods like vegetables and fruits, along with inadequate fluid intake, is a major contributing factor. Many kids are having an unbalanced diet which is also one of the leading causes of paediatric constipation, which is becoming more prevalent among children."

Summer Worsens The Situation

Doctors say that constipation has nothing to do with seasons yet the cases surge during summer due to many kids not rehydrating properly.

"Sedentary lifestyles among children have further aggravated the issue. Many kids are spending more time indoors, sitting, eating, and watching TV or mobile screens, rather than engaging in outdoor activities and hence the sedentary lifestyle significantly increases the risk of constipation. Moreover, excessive consumption of milk and dairy products can also contribute to constipation. We are seeing an increased number of children experiencing symptoms such as stomach pain, reduced appetite, abdominal discomfort, hard stools, and irregular bowel movements, often occurring once in three to four days," said Dr Ashok MV.

What Parents Can Do To Help

Dr Ashok MV emphasised the importance of dietary changes as a first-line solution and stated that parents should check the dietary habits which is the primary step to address constipation in children.

"Children should be made to consume more fibre-rich foods, drink plenty of fluids, and engage in regular physical activity. If these dietary adjustments do not show improvement, consulting a paediatrician is essential to determine if medication is needed. Diet counselling also plays a crucial role in prevention and management. Medical intervention may be essential in case of continued constipation despite dietary changes and increased physical activity. Mild cases can be treated by prescribing stool softeners."

Why Constipation In Children Should Not Be Ignored

Dr. Ashok stated that in case of chronic constipation (which does not improve with diet and standard treatment) may indicate underlying medical conditions, necessitating further evaluation. Chronic constipation can affect a child's overall growth, result in frequent stomach pain and disrupt normal activities. As young kids may not tell about their discomfort, parents should understand that long-term constipation should be taken seriously. Parents should consult doctors who can suggest medical evaluation like checking for urinary infections, gastrointestinal issues, or underlying conditions like hypothyroidism. Regular potty training is also essential. Parents should encourage children to use the toilet at a fixed time every day, to establish a healthy routine, warning that ignoring constipation can lead to long-term complications, but with timely intervention, it can be effectively managed.

With the right dietary habits, regular hydration, physical activity, and guidance from paediatricians, constipation in children can be both prevented and managed effectively.
