Teenage is the most vulnerable phase of growing up. Teenage is the stage where your child is neither a kid nor an adult, and you need to be extra careful about his/her whereabouts. Once your child enters the teenage phase, there are things that he/she would keep a secret. They would not want to share these details with you. It may or may not stem out of fear; but most definitely some of these habits come from the need of privacy.

Teenage is the time when friends and peer groups become important. There is more worldly knowledge, and slowly your child is steering hard to move out of the protective environment you have given him/her for so long.

Know your Teen’s Peer Group
Don’t ask them to introduce their peer group right away. But, start with casual talks, and slowly get them to open up about their friends and peer group. When you get a chance, meet them, and see how your child behaves with them. Is your child trying to be one of them, losing his own identity? It helps to know your child, and their behavioural changes. When you know their friends, you know how to react whenever they ask permission to spend time with someone. This might help in dealing with kids influenced by bad company.

Get a Family Pact Done
The family should have a pact on peer group. For example, the teen should build their trust by spending time with their friends under supervision of their parents. Let the parents get to meet the friends, and then they can engage in peer groups. Parental approval should be taken before moving on, and this needs to be understood completely.

Positive Beats Negative
You need to build up positive influence that can negate the negative influence. For this purpose, try to encourage your kids to join some clubs, or activities where you feel they will gain positivity. You will need to find out more about such clubs and gently persuade them to join such activities. This is one of the best ways of dealing with kids in bad company

Some of the bad habits stem out of frustration of not having enough confidence. Kids who suffer from an inferiority complex or are low on confidence generally get allured by the negative peer group. You will need to build their confidence and influence them towards positive activities. Build your teens strength so that they can stand negativity. Kids in bad company tend to have tons of issues, try understanding them instead of giving them an upper hand.

It is important to understand why they are in such a group, and what they are gaining from such groups.
