Networking Sites Effect Academic Performance

Popular social networking sites such as Facebook have been blamed for distracting kids from their studies.

A poll, concluded that nearly 80 per cent of students aged 11 to 18 said social networking sites were a distraction from their studies. In this age group, kids easily get addicted to the Internet and networking sites. The addiction is such that instead of studying they are hooked on to these sites.

As many as 75 per cent said they went online to check their web profiles at least once a day, while more than half felt they spent too much time on the sites.

Facebook communities such as 'I tried to study, but ended up on Facebook' and 'I was studying, suddenly I'm in Facebook' were cited as indications to the problem.

Student motivation expert and survey author Glen Gerreyn said, "It's understandable that school kids want to be socially connected, but it's concerning that sites like Facebook have become such a major distraction for students."

To a large extend, parents and their busy schedules are also to be blamed. Now a days, most of the parents – both mother and father are working. The kids are alone at home without any supervision. Neither do they have anybody to talk to, so the obvious alternative is to turn to the Internet.

Very few kids in their teens have self control and strictly divide their time between studies and Internet. Most of them get addicted to it and consequently, their academic results is effected negatively.
