From Contractions To Water Breaking: Knowing When It's Time For The Hospital During Pregnancy
Congratulations! You're nearing the finish line of your pregnancy journey, and the anticipation is building. As your due date approaches, it's essential to decipher the signs of true labor from the common occurrences that might trick you into thinking it's time.
The false labour signs aka the Braxton Hicks can be quite confusing for any parent. So, here are the signs you need to look out for and when you should go to the hospital.

Are You In False Labour? How To Know The Real Signs
1. Recognising true contractions
False labor pains, also known as Braxton Hicks contractions, may have teased you throughout your pregnancy. However, true contractions are distinguishable by their regularity, intensity, and duration.
Real contractions tend to get stronger over time, occurring at regular intervals, and don't subside with changes in activity or position.
2. Monitoring the frequency
True labor contractions follow a pattern. Time the duration between each contraction. If they become regular and occur at intervals that are consistently getting shorter, it might be a sign that your body is gearing up for labor.
Aim for contractions that are about 5 minutes apart or less.
3. Evaluating intensity
The intensity of true labor contractions increases gradually. If the discomfort becomes more severe and is accompanied by a tightening sensation in your abdomen that peaks and then subsides, it might be time to consider heading to the hospital.

4. Checking for consistency
Consistency is key. True labor contractions won't be deterred by a change in activity or position. If you find that your contractions persist, regardless of whether you're resting or moving around, it could be a signal that labor is underway.
5. Assessing the waterworks
One of the surefire signs of labor is the rupture of the amniotic sac, commonly known as your water breaking. If you experience a sudden gush or a continuous trickle of fluid, it's a clear indication that you should seek medical attention promptly.
6. Trusting your instincts
Sometimes, your intuition can be a valuable guide. If you have a gut feeling that something is different and it's time to go to the hospital, don't ignore it. Maternal instincts are powerful, and it's okay to err on the side of caution.
When To Go To The Hospital?
Now that you're armed with the knowledge of true labor signs, the question arises: when is the right time to make your way to the hospital? Here's a breakdown:
7. Contractions every 5 minutes (or less)
When your contractions are consistently coming every 5 minutes or less, it's a good indicator that labor is progressing, and it's time to head to the hospital.
8. Intense and regular contractions
If your contractions are becoming more intense, lasting around 60 seconds or more, and follow a consistent pattern, it's a strong signal to make your way to the hospital.

9. Water breaking
The rupture of the amniotic sac is a significant event. If your water breaks, even if you're not experiencing contractions, it's crucial to seek medical attention promptly to reduce the risk of infection.
On A Final Note...
In the journey of pregnancy, decoding the signs of labor can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. Trust your body, pay attention to the signals it's sending, and, when in doubt, consult with your doctor.
