World Pollution Control Day 2023: Conscious Choices That Can Curb Pollution, And Build A Sustainable Future
Protecting the environment from pollution is crucial for sustaining life on Earth. India observes National Pollution Control Day on December 2 in memory of people who lost their lives in the Bhopal gas tragedy. This industrial accident occurred in 1984. The gas Methyl Isocyanate leaked on the night of 2-3 December killing thousands of innocent lives.

India faces a great challenge to its development, social as well as economic, health, and well-being of its residents because of pollution. According to the data available on the National Health Portal, around 7 million people lose their lives every year alone because of air pollution.
This happens because high levels of air pollutants can add up to 20% higher risk of lung cancer-related deaths s compared to the risk for people living in lesser polluted areas. The problem is that such grave and persistent air pollution also contributes to climate change and the challenge is this will only worsen. For instance, vehicular emission has been known to be majorly responsible for Air pollution.
About 500 million cars are already running on roads and by 2030, the number will only rise to 1 billion.
To curb pollution, we should focus on reducing emissions from vehicles and industries, promoting renewable energy sources, enforcing environmental regulations, and fostering a culture of waste reduction and recycling. Pollution Control Day underscores the urgent need for global cooperation in preserving the health of our planet.

Governments and environmental organizations often use this day to announce and implement policies and initiatives focused on pollution control. These measures may include stricter regulations on industrial emissions, promoting sustainable practices, and advocating for cleaner technologies.
Pollution Control Day serves as a call to action, urging everyone to take responsibility for their actions and make conscious choices that contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable world. It reinforces the idea that pollution is a shared challenge that requires collaborative efforts to mitigate its impact and preserve the planet for future generations.
