Pandit Ravi Shanker Bids A Musical Farewell
The grape vine says that Pandit Ravi Shankar, who is proclaimed by popular consensus as the best sitar player in the world, is going to retire soon. The beginning of his retirement series of shows will begin from the garden city of Bangalore in India. Yes, the master of Sitar as a music form is about to give his last performance in Banglaore bidding the beautiful city a good bye for ever. Is this the beginning of a retirement from public life? We are yet to know.
The fact that Pandit Ravi Shankar is 92 years of age doesn't really support this busy social life but as he is so well loved he has carried forth so far. He will obviously give this last performance with his daughter (younger one, the elder is Norah Jones who is also a musician) Anoushka Shankar. Apart from being his daughter, she is also his protege, the favoured heir to carry on the legacy of sitar as a musical art form from here on.
So you will have two big reasons to attend this Bangalore event which has been named 'Farewell To Bangalore' by the organisers. Firstly you will see Pandit Ravi Shankar on stage for the last time. Secondly this last performance will also be the last time this father daughter or master protege duo perform together in the city.
This concert is a part of the 'Premanjali' Festival, organised by trust that works with homeless children.
