History Of National Film Awards
First introduced in 1954, these awards were initially known as the State Awards. They recognized the best films in various regional languages. It wasn't until 1967 that awards for actors and technicians were included. Nargis was the first to win Best Actress for Raat Aur Din, while Uttam Kumar won Best Actor for Antony Firingee and Chiriyakhana.
The National Film Awards aim to encourage the production of films with aesthetic and technical excellence and social relevance. This is according to the Directorate of Film Festivals under the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
