Humanitarian Award For Jerry Lewis At Oscars

Legendary comedian Jerry Lewis is to be put on the pedestal with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the Academy Awards ceremony on February 22. The veteran comedian is to bag this award as per the award's recognition for the humanitarian efforts which brings credit to the film industry.

The award has been given out Intermittently at the Oscars since 1956.

It is to be noted that the 82 year old actor of the 'Nutty Professor' has raised over 2 billion dollars for the Muscular Dystrophy Association through his annual Labor Day telethon according to the BBC.


"a legendary comedian who has... brought laughter to millions around the world" Sid Ganis, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, refers to the star who has shook the tummy of the audience in an endless peal of laughter through his performance. He also said that the actor has "helped thousands upon thousands by raising funds and awareness for those suffering from muscular dystrophy"

The honour was conferred on producer Sherry Lansing in 2007 last. Other former recipients include Bob Hope, Gregory Peck, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman.
