Reasons For Pain On One Side Of Chest

When you experience pain in the chest, you may first suspect pain in the heart. But both the heart as well as the lungs are located in the same area and there could be so many other reasons behind pain on one side of the chest.
Chest pain is alarming because we associate the condition to a heart attack. It is important to rush to a doctor to rule out any serious health issues.

Also, diagnosis can specify the actual cause behind the pain on one side of the chest. Here are some reasons behind such pains.

Bone Fracture
Pain towards the side of the chest could also be due to a small fracture in the rib. If the pain occurs due to a fall or an accident, then it could be due to the injury to the bone. In fact, even a tight hug can cause the pain. Sometimes, either lung issues or lung injuries could cause the pain.

Inflamed Cartilage
The cartilage of the ribs may cause pain in case of inflammation. Strain, injury or even rheumatoid arthritis may also be the reasons. Even compression or injury of nerves in that area may also cause pain.

Cancer
Certain types of cancers including lung cancer can also cause pain in the side of the chest. Quit smoking and visit a doctor. Even mesothelioma which is a cancer (caused by asbestos exposure) may cause the pain.

Viral Infections
Even viral infections like shingles can cause pain in the chest. In some cases, lack of blood supply to the lung tissue may also cause the pain.

Strained Muscles
The muscles around your chest may cause the pain in case of of strain or a tear. If you are into heavy weight lifting exercises, or suffering from persistent cough, you may experience pain on one side of your chest.

Infections
Even infections like pulmonary tuberculosis and pneumonia may cause pain on one side of the chest. Infections that cause build up of pus or fluid in the lungs could cause the pain. Even inflamed airways (bronchiectasis) could cause pain.

Acid Reflux
Acid reflux is a digestive issue. But it may cause heart burn and cause pain in the chest. This way, there are so many reasons behind the pain. Don't ignore it. Visit a doctor and get yourself tested to know the actual cause behind the pain.
