On World No Tobacco Day, Youth Of Bharat United Urges PM Modi To Strengthen COTPA For A #TobaccoFreeBharat

Observing World No Tobacco Day on 31st May, the youth of Bharat joined hands to urge the Prime Minister to strengthen tobacco laws and regulations (Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act), and create a Tobacco Free Bharat to save youth from tobacco addiction.

World No Tobacco Day was created in 1987 by the Member States of the World Health Organization to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and the preventable death and disease it causes. On this day, organizations across the globe join hands to inform the public about the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco companies, what they are doing to fight the tobacco epidemic, and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living and to protect future generations.

World No-Tobacco Day holds immense significance in the global fight against tobacco use. It underscores the importance of collective action to combat the tobacco epidemic and protect public health. Commemorating this day, youth from all across India have come together on Josh to urge their Prime Minister to make the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act stronger.

According to the World Health Organisation, tobacco use is a major risk factor for many chronic diseases, including cancer, lung disease, cardiovascular disease and stroke. It is one of the major causes of death and disease in India and accounts for nearly 13.5 lakh deaths every year. Nearly 26.7 crore adults (15 years and above) in India (29% of all adults) are users of tobacco, according to the Global Adult Tobacco Survey India, 2016-17.

The youth of India are leading the Tobacco Free Bharat campaign in different parts of India, to create more awareness on the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) and the need to make stronger laws against tobacco consumption.

The most prevalent form of tobacco use in India is smokeless tobacco, and commonly used products are khaini, gutkha, betel quid with tobacco and zarda. Smoking forms of tobacco used are bidi, cigarette and hookah. This campaign breaks the mainstream perception of tobacco as synonymous with cigarettes through its creative communications.
