Do You Pick Your Nose? Stop! It Can Increase COVID Risk
In these unprecedented times, where diseases are aplenty, it is crucial to be aware of the various ways in which we can inadvertently increase our risk of contracting COVID-19. One 'seemingly harmless' habit we often overlook is nose-picking.
Recent research findings have revealed a surprising connection between nose-picking and an increased risk of COVID-19 transmission [1].

What Is The Link Between Nose-Picking and COVID-19 Transmission?
Recent studies conducted by experts have shown that nose-picking can facilitate the transmission of COVID-19. Among healthcare workers, nose-picking has been found to be a factor in the spread of the COVID infection.
Doctors were the most likely to be nose-pickers, followed by medical residents, specialists, support staff, and nurses.
When we pick our noses, we come into contact with our nasal passages, which can be a breeding ground for viruses. Additionally, the act of picking can cause micro-tears in the delicate lining of the nose, making it easier for the virus to enter our bloodstream.
In the study, there were no associations found between COVID and other behavioural or lifestyle characteristics, such as nail-biting, wearing glasses or wearing a beard, and the researchers determined that the nasal cavity serves as a "main transit port" for SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

Tips To Stay Safe...
1. Practice good hand hygiene: Regularly wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use a hand sanitiser containing at least 60% alcohol.
2. Avoid touching your face: Be mindful of touching your nose, mouth, or eyes, especially when you are in public places.
3. Use tissues or handkerchiefs: If you need to clear your nasal passages, use a tissue or handkerchief instead of picking your nose directly.

On A Final Note...
While it may seem like a harmless habit, nose-picking can have serious consequences during the COVID-19 pandemic - and not just during that, if you ask experts. Just don't pick your nose guys, it's unhygienic, it's disgusting - just don't do it!
