Delhi Air Quality: Breathing Exercises To Combat The Effects Of Air Pollution

Breathing Exercises To Combat The Effects Of Air Pollution
1. Diaphragmatic Breathing
- Sit or lie down in a comfortable position.
- Place one hand on your chest and the other on your abdomen.
- Inhale deeply through your nose, expanding your abdomen.
- Exhale slowly through your mouth, ensuring your chest remains still.
- Repeat this for a few minutes to calm your body and maximise oxygen intake.

2. Anulom Vilom (Alternate Nostril Breathing)
- Sit comfortably with your back straight.
- Close your right nostril with your thumb and inhale deeply through the left.
- Close your left nostril with your ring finger, release the right nostril, and exhale.
- Inhale through the right nostril.
- Close the right nostril, release the left, and exhale through the left.
- This exercise helps clear your respiratory passages and oxygenate your body.
3. The 4-7-8 Technique
- Find a quiet place to sit or lie down.
- Inhale through your nose for a count of 4.
- Hold your breath for a count of 7.
- Exhale slowly and completely through your mouth for a count of 8.
- This technique calms your nervous system, reduces stress, and increases lung capacity.

4. Box Breathing
- Sit with your back straight and feet flat on the floor.
- Inhale through your nose for a count of 4.
- Hold your breath for 4 counts.
- Exhale through your mouth for a count of 4.
- Hold your breath for another 4 counts.
- Box breathing increases oxygen intake and enhances concentration.
5. Breath of Fire
- Sit with a straight back and close your eyes.
- Inhale and exhale rapidly and forcefully through your nose.
- Keep the focus on your diaphragm.
- This exercise detoxifies the body and increases lung capacity, ideal for combating pollution.
