Can You Refreeze Melted Ice Cream? Is It Safe
The summers are here (looks like it never really went away) and the temperatures are soaring high, again. To keep yourself healthy and not faint in the scorching heat, cooling foods are both soothing and important. And while not entirely healthy per se, one food that is synonymous with summer is - ICE CREAM!

Are ice creams a good option during the summer? Absolutely, but what about melted ice cream? With the frequent current cuts in summer, the ice cream in your fridge is bound to melt. However, is it safe to refreeze melted ice cream? Let's take a look.
Can You Refreeze Melted Ice Cream? Is It Safe?
Can you refreeze melted ice cream? The short answer is yes, but it is not always safe to do so. Refreezing melted ice cream can cause the ice cream to lose its texture, flavour, and nutritional value. It can also produce harmful bacteria that can cause food poisoning [1]. This is like trying to put out a fire with gasoline. You might get the fire out, but you're creating a whole other problem in the process.
When ice cream melts, it can become a breeding ground for bacteria. The bacteria may be present in the ice cream before it melts, but when it melts, it can start to multiply. Freezing it again will not kill the bacteria, so any ice cream that has been melted should be discarded.

If you do decide to refreeze melted ice cream, it is important to do it as soon as possible. The longer it sits out, the more time bacteria have to grow. Put the melted ice cream in an airtight container and place it in the freezer [2].
Allow the ice cream to freeze for a few hours, and then take it out and let it thaw in the refrigerator for a few minutes before serving. Be sure to discard any ice cream that has been left out for more than two hours.
The longer melted ice cream sits out, the more moisture it collects, which can lead to the growth of bacteria. Freezing the ice cream quickly helps to prevent bacteria growth as the cold temperature slows the bacteria's growth rate. Additionally, thawing it for a few minutes in the refrigerator helps to bring the ice cream to a safe temperature to be eaten [3].
On A Final Note...
It is also important to note that melted ice cream that has been refrozen should not be eaten. The texture and flavour will likely be compromised, and it could contain harmful bacteria.

If you find yourself in a situation where you have to refreeze melted ice cream, the safest thing to do is to discard it.
