Can Steroid Eye Drops Cause Blindness?
A lot of us use eye drops for several things, including dry eyes, conjunctivitis, glaucoma, allergic eye disease, injury to the eye, and contact lens care. There are different types of eye drops which serve different eye problems.
And steroid eye drops are a type of eye drop that contains a corticosteroid, naturally occurring hormones produced by the body.

Corticosteroids have anti-inflammatory properties, which can be used to treat eye conditions that involve inflammation, such as allergic conjunctivitis, uveitis, and keratitis.
However, a recent study has raised a concern that there is a possibility that steroid eye drops could potentially trigger blindness [1].
Can Steroid Eye Drops Cause Blindness?
- Steroid eye drops are commonly prescribed to treat various eye conditions, including inflammation, allergies, and certain infections.
- These drops work by reducing inflammation and suppressing the immune system's response, providing relief from symptoms and promoting healing.

Side Effects of steroid eye drops
While steroid eye drops are generally safe and effective when used as directed, they can have potential side effects.
- Common side effects include temporary blurred vision, stinging or burning sensation, increased eye pressure, and mild eye irritation.
An adverse side effect of steroid medication is central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC), in which fluid accumulates beneath the retina, which can lead to retinal detachment and vision loss.
Although rare, there have been reports of serious complications associated with long-term and excessive use of steroid eye drops. These complications include cataracts (clouding of the eye's natural lens), glaucoma (increased pressure within the eye), and delayed wound healing after eye surgery.
However, it is essential to note that these cases are extremely uncommon and usually occur when high doses are used for an extended period.

On A Final Note...
While steroid eye drops can have potential side effects, including rare complications, the fact that they can cause blindness is not entirely accurate.
When used as directed and under medical supervision, steroid eye drops are generally safe and effective in treating various eye conditions. It is important to consult your doctor for proper diagnosis, treatment.
