Bone-Breaking Surgery To Boost Height Leaves Chinese Couple Permanently Disabled
Cosmetic surgery has become increasingly popular as people seek to enhance their physical appearance and boost their self-esteem. From minor procedures to extensive operations, the promise of achieving a more desirable look can be alluring.
However, behind the glossy advertisements and success stories, there are significant risks and drawbacks associated with cosmetic surgery.

Recently, a controversial leg-lengthening surgery, which involves breaking bones to increase height, has sparked debate in China. Two individuals recently shared their regrets about undergoing the procedure.
Earlier this month, Henan TV reported that a woman from Jiangsu province spent 600,000 yuan (US$84,000) for the surgery abroad, hoping to gain 13cm (5 inches) in height.
Instead of the anticipated joy, she faced severe physical issues post-surgery. She developed a bone infection and now struggles with basic activities like running or walking quickly.
Additionally, she experiences difficulty breathing. "My life has been totally ruined. If there was an operation to reverse this, I would have it at once," she lamented.
Height-Boosting Surgery
Another case involved a 29-year-old man from Henan province who felt inferior due to his height of 164cm. He underwent the same surgery at a public hospital in China for over 100,000 yuan (US$14,000).
Post-operation, he was left with legs of different lengths and remained dissatisfied with his height. "I am not much taller than before. What's more, I am now disabled," he said.
Medical professionals explain that the limb extension procedure entails breaking leg bones and using an external metal device to stretch them apart before fixing them back together. This complex process can lead to significant complications if not done correctly.
Limb Extension Surgery Banned For Cosmetic Purposes
According to a 2006 regulation by China's Ministry of Health, limb-extension surgery is restricted to individuals with congenital deformities or those whose bones are uneven due to injury, tumor, or infection. The procedure is banned for cosmetic purposes.
This isn't the first time Chinese media has highlighted such surgeries. Previously, reports focused on individuals undergoing the procedure for medical reasons. In 2022, a 19-year-old woman from Jiangxi province increased her height by 6cm after surgery but faced severe knee and ankle joint problems as a result.
The risks associated with these surgeries are substantial and often outweigh the benefits. The stories of these two individuals serve as cautionary tales about the potential dangers of seeking cosmetic height enhancement through invasive procedures.
The woman's experience underscores the physical and emotional toll such surgeries can take on patients. Despite spending a significant amount of money and enduring painful recovery processes, many find themselves worse off than before.
While the desire for increased height is understandable, the potential consequences of such drastic measures should not be underestimated. The medical community continues to advise against non-essential limb-lengthening surgeries due to their high risk of complications and long-term health impacts.
