'Umrao Jaan' Pre-Release Premiere Was A Fashion Tribute To Rekha, Know Who Wore What
Rekha's portrayal of 'Umrao Jaan' in Muzaffar Ali's 1981 film has never quite left the public imagination. As the courtesan-poet navigating life, art, and longing in 19th-century Lucknow, she delivered a performance rooted in restraint, emotion, and command.
The film, adapted from Mirza Hadi Ruswa's classic Urdu novel, gave Indian cinema one of its most visually and emotionally rich characters. With its re-release in June 2025, the tribute wasn't limited to the screen-Bollywood turned up to honour the woman who gave 'Umrao Jaan' its unforgettable soul. And on the red carpet, that reverence came through in fabric, silhouette, and styling.
Rekha: A Presence That Grounds The Room
Wearing an ivory and gold outfit with measured grace, Rekha didn't just arrive-she brought the mood of 'Umrao Jaan' with her. Her look echoed the film's elegance and depth. Without saying much, she reminded everyone why some performances-and people-never fade.
Alia Bhatt: A Graceful Nod To Silsila
Alia Bhatt stood out at the 'Umrao Jaan' re-release by paying tribute to Rekha's Silsila look. She wore a blush pink silk saree with a halter blouse, styled with silver feather earrings and soft makeup featuring kohl-lined eyes and peach lips evoking Rekha's iconic character, Chandni.
Janhvi Kapoor: Youthful Elegance
In a white and gold Anarkali, Janhvi's look paid tribute to Umrao Jaan's aesthetic. Her sweetheart neckline and flowing dupatta were balanced with classic jewellery and soft makeup, creating a clean, graceful image that aligned with the evening's tone.
Tabu: Bold Without Flash
Tabu wore a deep red lehenga with a short kurti, her hair tied with gajra. The colour, the shape, the way she moved and her long hug with Rekha didn't need styling notes. It was a reminder of what charisma without performance looks like.
Khushi Kapoor: Retro With A Twist
Golden bootcut pants and a matching shirt-Khushi's retro look was unexpected but well-considered. It hinted at vintage fashion without leaning too far into costume. A fresh perspective, confidently carried.
Fatima Sana Shaikh: Simplicity, Styled Right
Fatima's Anarkali and salwar combination was all about movement and flow. The way she wore her dupatta reminiscent of Rekha spoke of admiration, but not imitation. That balance worked beautifully.
Beyond Appearances
What stood out at this screening wasn't just what people wore-but how they wore it. These weren't costumes; they were tributes. Each outfit, whether traditional or interpretive, reflected the enduring influence of Rekha's style and the emotional weight of her legacy.
A Red Carpet With Memory
Rekha didn't just set a fashion standard-she set a tone. One that blends strength with silence, tradition with individuality. The stars didn't just look good-they told stories.
Not stories of the past, but of how that past still moves through what we wear, how we show up, and the people we choose to honour.
