Warkari is a cult of devotion and a spiritual tradition which originally came from Maharashtra. They worship the deity of pandharpur, which is a form of Krishna.

Thousands of Warkaris journey from Alandi and Dehu to Pandharpur and walk about 250km on Aashad Ekadashi. They carry padukas of saints in palkhis and sing songs as they journey ahead.

With each step the fervour and the intensity of chant increases and they do not feel tired or experience changes in their health condition, after walking such a long distance.

A research which was conducted on them said that their heart actually gained in strength as they travelled on foot from Alandi to Pandharput which it said was due to chanting vittal name.

When tested, they observed that pronouncing the word Vittal impacted the heart positively. The Tuh syllable at the end of Vittal ( vitthal ) caused this positive change.

Pune based cardiac surgeon Dr Avinash Inamdar and Geopathologist Pandit Pramod Joshi claimed that nama japa keeps your heart healthy. Doctors agree unanimously that meditation can help the body in a beneficial way.

These two specialists monitored the heart functioning of 30 people and also checked their energy levels in their heart chakra.

They made the group sit for 10 minutes in meditation and then recorded significant improvement in the functions of the heart after comparing the before results to after results. Their study was published in prestigious journals.

Basically what inspired these reserarchers to conduct the research on the warkaris was the way these people walked kilometers after kilometers chanting the vitthal mantra.

These 30 people who were checked by the doctors were in the age group of 20-60 years. The research went on for a year. Some of those who allowed the doctors to experiment with them belonged to the group of atheists and theists and business men.

During the test, the participants chanted Vitthals name for ten minutes. Before and after chanting, the blood pressure, pulse rate, ECG and 2D Echo were conducted.

Before chanting and after chanting, various tests like Blood pressure, heart-beats, ECG, were done. There was a 20 percent improvement in the energy levels of the participants as per Dr. Inamdar,

These tests were performed to see the effect of devotion, spiritual emotion and the deity's name on the human body.

Many cardiologists, however, said any form of meditation can improve a person's heart rate and helped when continued for a long time.

The BP and pulse rates appeared to have balanced. The injection fraction in 2D Echo also increased positively.

Another eminent cardiologist at Ruby Hall Clinic explained this thus. During a nightmare, we get palpitations. Same way, concentrating on only one object continuously for a long time improves heart functions. The Japa activity helped to control autonomic nervous system.

Other cardiologists opine that focusing on a single point reduced stress and helped the heart. Any deep meditation would help enormously.

The research team has plans to conduct the same research on healthy and heart patients and see if the same results can be achieved in their cases. The heart rate increased from 70 beats per minute to above 85.
