Bhagwan Swaminarayan Jayanti 2023: Legend, Akshar Dham And His Life Mission

Bhagwan Shri Swaminarayan was born on Chaitra Navami on 3rd April 1781 AD on the same day as Ram Navami. Bhagvan Swaminarayan was the founder of Swaminarayan cult and is thought to be an incarnation of the Supreme Being.

The Jayanti date of Bhagwan arrives on 30 March, 2023. Born in Chhapaiya village to Dharma Dev and Bhakti Devi as Ghanashyam, on 3 April, he grew up to be an incarnation of God. The world Famous temple of Akshar Dham was built in his memory.

From his impressionable years, his interests drifted towards spirituality. Markandeya Muni, a saint foresaw Ghanashyam growing up to be a spiritual leader that would uplift people's lives and this proved true in the case of Ghanashyam.

When his father showed him a Bhagavad Gita, gold coin and a small dagger, the young Ghanashyam chose Bhagavadgita and surprised his father. He gave an inkling at that time, that he was born to clearn the society of its impurities and to teach life lessons and bring back the older order of Dharma back to human life.

Ghanashyam's spirituality and knowledge inspired hundreds of people who were inspired to follow his instructions. He was thereafter given the name" Bhagwan Swaminarayan." The world was disintegrating with respect to values and principles and hence he aimed at reviving the values that the world was fast losing, that of Dharma, Satya, Ahimsa and Brahmacharya.

On this day, nirjala upavas or fast is observed. Participating in spiritual programs, reading the scriptures, and listening to discourses is a must. The day of Swaminarayan's birth is remembered by placing a small idol in a cradle and performing aarti to it at 10:10 pm at all his temples. It is considered as the time of incarnation. Incidents from his life are narrated and scriptures are read and kirtans are sung.

New Delhi's famous Akshardham, that is known the world over, originally is built in the name of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. 'Akshardham' when translated, means God's abode. The main idea behind building this temple is to commemorate the birth and life of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, sages and Gods of Sanatana Dharma. It is is also a cultural hub that promotes learning, and harmony. Akshar Dham is not the only one, but several other shrines have been built in his memory in various countries.

Earlier Avatars of Rama and Krishna came down to earth with a specific purpose. Ram for the annihilation of Ravan and Krishna for reinstating dharma by killing the demons and saving the virtuous. Howeve swami Narayans incarnation came with an aim to help people realise the supreme being and grant salvation. For this mission, Swami Narayan incarnated in a human form to achieve this.

Bhagwan Swaminarayan, during his journey of life, elevated the souls of millions, opened their eyes to the truths of life here and beyond. He also instrumental in wiping out several social vices and correcting unhealthy practices that were being followed to degrade Hinduism. He discarded his mortal coils and merged with God on 1st June 1830 AD.
