As Onam, the joyous and vibrant festival, amidst the festive celebrations and sumptuous feasts, there's a wonderful opportunity to incorporate healthy choices into your meals.
And what better option than OATS? These oats recipes not only pay homage to tradition but also keep your health in mind, allowing you to revel in the festivities without compromising on your wellness goals.
Let's check out these delectable oat-based dishes that will undoubtedly add an extra layer of joy to your Onam celebrations while promoting a balanced and nourishing lifestyle.
1. Oats Kheer
To make the oat kheer, you will need 1 cup of oats, 1 2 liter of milk, dried fruits, sugar, and a few fruits.

How To Make Oats kheer
- In a pan, roast the oats well.
- Milk and sugar are heated in a separate pan.
- Add the oat mixture to the warm milk and continue stirring.
- Add dried fruits like almonds, cashews, dates, and cardamom once the mixture has thickened.
- Stir thoroughly.
- To enhance the flavour of the kheer, you can add fruits like bananas and mangos.

2. Oats Idli
To make the oat idli, all you need are some rushed oats, grated carrots, salt, curd mustard oil curry leaves chana dal urad dal and some green chillies.
How To Make Oats Idli
- Pan-roast the oats before crushing them into a fine powder.
- Add the salt and curd to the oat powder along with grated carrots.
- Heat some oil in a frying pan then add curry leaves mustard seeds urad dal and chana dal to idli batter.
- Add this mixture.
- After that, the batter should be thoroughly blended, and thick in consistency(similar to idli batter).
- Steam the idlis until they are done in a greased idli pan.
- At last, garnish the oat idli with fresh and grated coconut.

3. Oats Upma
To make the oat upma, all you need are two cups of cooked rolled oats, turmeric, salt, chopped chillies onions carrots green peas finely diced bell peppers curry leaves urad dal mustard oil mustard seeds lemon shredded coconut and some coriander to garnish the upma.
How To Make Oats Upma
- Heat the pan and add one teaspoon of oil to it.
- Put the oats turmeric a little salt and green chillies into the pan.
- Until the oats turn light brown roast for 4-5 minutes.
- Cover the oats and cook them for 5-7 minutes or until they are mushy after adding some water.
- Meanwhile, add some additional oil and mustard seeds to a different pan.
- Add urad dal once seeds start to pop, and roast until dal turns golden brown.
- After that add onions, salt, turmeric, and curry leaves, and sauté until onions become translucent.
- Add peas and diced carrots, and simmer for approximately a minute or until carrots start to soften.
- When you feel your oats are almost done, add salt, sprinkle bell peppers on top, and then add this veggie mixture to the oats.
- Cook for almost a minute, then serve and enjoy the meal.
