Char Dham Yatra 2023: The Marvel Of Tungnath Temple At Panch Kedar, Uttarakhand

Panch Kedar temples are the major pilgrimage centres for the Shaivaite devotees. Situated in the Garhwal Himalayan region in Uttarakhand, these temples are mainly dedicated to Lord Shiva and are widely famous for many legends that hint about the connection of Pandavas of Mahabharat times with the construction of these temples. Pandavas are believed to have built the Panch Kedar in order to wash away their sins acquired due to the killing of their own kith and kin in the war of Kurukshetra.

The Natural Beauty Surrounding Tungnath temple

Tungnath temple lies at a height of 3680m in Rudraprayag and is regarded as the highest temple of Lord Shiva in the world. It takes a trek from Chopta for about 4 kilometers to reach this temple. This is a 1000-year-old temple in which during the tussle between the Pandavas and Shiva in the bull's form, the hands of the bull emerged out. Mountain ranges with luminous peaks like Nanda Devi, Chowkhamba, Neelkanth and Kedarnath can be spotted on the way up here. Also, as you walk past, exquisite rhododendron flowers in the surrounding meadows invite you to a mystical experience and if you further continue your trek up to Chandrashila peak, you will be greeted with Entrancing peaks of mountain ranges. .

Architectural Uniqueness Of Tungnath

This Small sized temple is built as per the North Indian style and at a time it can accommodate only 10 people in the sanctum. In the surrounding area, you can spot several small shrines built for several Gods. There is a black rock that is believed to be the arm of Lord Shiva with its extremities making contact with the most important part of the temple. A gateway for entrance that is aptly named Tungnath, is built over the arch. This area also is notable for several temples built of stone and painted brightly. Nandi And Other Idols

At the other side of the entrance, you can see Lord Ganesha statue apart from which you can see idols of sage Vyas, disciples of Shiva, Pandavas and Kala Bhairav bring out the archaic aura of the temple to a discernible extent.

Goddess Parvati enjoys a place inside a sanctum in a small shrine of this temple, You could also find five shrines that represent the Panch Kedar situated to the right of Tungnath temple. At Tungnath temple, South Indian brahmins have been appointed to provide priestly services. The climate during April to November is particularly clement for the travellers and not much chill is experienced at this time.
