During pregnancy, the amount of blood in the body increases and that is when potassium is required to maintain optimum chemical balance. Also, it can reduce cramps in the legs during pregnancy.

The recommended amount of potassium is 4700 mg per day during pregnancy. For nursing mothers, it is around 5000 mg per day.

If you are suffering from diarrhea or vomiting, potassium levels in your body may dip. Other symptoms that indicate low potassium in your body are: fatigue, constipation, weakness, muscle cramps, depression, numbness, low BP and dry skin.

Low potassium can cause edema during the 7-9 months of pregnancy. It is better to consult a gynecologist if you see any of the above symptoms during pregnancy. Doctors may recommend foods rich in this mineral and may also advice supplements of potassium.
