Private, nomadic, and fiercely idealistic, Durov has long been a champion of digital freedom. But now, he's become headline-worthy for reasons far beyond Silicon Valley-touching on legacy, family, and a plan for the future that's as unconventional as he is.
Who Is Pavel Durov?
Born on October 10, 1984 in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Pavel Durov co-founded VKontakte, the Russian equivalent of Facebook, in 2006 before launching Telegram in 2013. A graduate of Saint Petersburg State University in Philology, Durov fled Russia in 2014 after the Kremlin pressured him to compromise user privacy. Now a digital nomad with citizenship in Saint Kitts and Nevis, France, and the UAE, he leads Telegram from his base in Dubai.
Telegram's Rise and Durov's Wealth
Telegram's core selling point has always been privacy-a refuge from the surveillance of big tech. With over a billion monthly users and more than $1 billion in annual revenue in 2024, Telegram became profitable for the first time last year observer.com.
Pavel Durov owns 100% of Telegram, turning it into a private yet immensely valuable asset. Bloomberg estimates his net worth at around $13.9 billion, while Forbes places it closer to $17.1 billion. These figures depend on Telegram's valuation method, using comparisons to publicly traded peers.
What's Driving His Wealth And Vision
Durov has never prioritized cash over ideals. Inspired by libertarianism, he has resisted turning Telegram into a data-hungry ad machine. His eventual monetization includes premium subscription tiers and non-invasive ads, all while using his wealth to support privacy tools like VPNs and anti-censorship efforts.
He's also been embroiled in legal battles. In August 2024, Durov was arrested in France and charged with failing to control content on Telegram related to illicit activities. The arrest sparked protests from free-speech advocates, with figures like Elon Musk and Edward Snowden defending him.
How Many Kids Will Inherit His Fortune?
In a stunning revelation, Durov-now 40-announced plans to leave his entire fortune to more than 100 children: six from his three romantic relationships and over 100 more from sperm donations in 12 countries, not all of whom he's even met.
Each child, whether biologically born to a partner or conceived via donation, will be treated equally under his will. However, none will gain access to their inheritance until 30 years from now, June 19, 2055. Durov says this delay is intentional, so they grow up independently and without the distortions of sudden wealth.
How Much Money per Child?
With an estimated fortune between $13.9 and $17.1 billion and more than 100 heirs, each stands to inherit roughly $130-160 million.
Why This Unconventional Plan?
Durov's life is under constant threat-not just from governments but from the legal and financial complexities of running a global, privacy-centered platform. He cites these dangers and his dedication to digital freedom as the reason for formalizing a will now.
He's also transparent about his philosophy: offering equality to all his children and safeguarding Telegram's future. There are plans for Telegram's eventual governance to move to a nonprofit foundation, ensuring continuity beyond his personal influence.
Whether you admire his ideals or wonder about his decisions, one thing is clear: Durov lives by his principles and plans ahead-literally until 2055.
