When Cooking Took A Backseat: Not Burgers Or Pizza, This Dish Ruled Swiggy Orders In 2025
December is when phones buzz with year-end round-ups, and food orders start telling their own story. What did we reach for when we didn't feel like cooking? What showed up at our doors on busy workdays, lazy Sundays, and late nights?
Swiggy's 2025 food data answers that clearly. Some favourites stayed unbeatable, some categories surprised, and a few comfort classics held their ground. Here's a look at what India actually ordered as the year came to a close.
Biryani Still Rules The Plate
If there's one constant in India's food ordering habits, it's biryani. In 2025, biryani crossed 93 million orders, once again making it Swiggy's most-ordered dish of the year. That's not a small lead, it's miles ahead of everything else.
Chicken biryani did most of the heavy lifting here, accounting for over half the total orders. Whether it was a solo dinner, a shared weekend meal, or a late-night fix, biryani remained the default choice when hunger met convenience.
Burgers And Pizzas: Comfort That Never Left
Right behind biryani were two familiar comfort foods that continue to dominate Indian delivery habits.
Burgers clocked in at 44.2 million orders, securing the second spot. Fast, filling, and easy to customise, burgers stayed popular across age groups and cities.
Pizzas followed closely with 40.1 million orders. Despite newer cuisines gaining visibility, pizza remains a dependable choice especially for group orders and weekend meals.
Together, burgers and pizzas show that while food trends change, some cravings don't.
South Indian Staples Held Their Ground
Not all top orders came from indulgent mains. Veg dosa took the fourth spot with 26.2 million orders, proving that South Indian staples continue to travel well on delivery apps. Breakfast favourites also made their presence felt beyond morning hours. Idli recorded around 11 million orders, and while it wasn't ranked officially in the overall top list, its numbers place it firmly among the year's most ordered items. Medu vada was frequently mentioned in Swiggy's breakfast data, though without a published final count, it remains a strong but unnumbered presence.
Desserts Had A Clear Winner
When it came to sweets, one dessert clearly stood out. White chocolate cake emerged as the most ordered dessert of 2025, with 6.9 million orders. It beat classic chocolate cake and other favourites, becoming the go-to choice for celebrations, birthdays, and casual indulgence.
Traditional desserts weren't far behind. Gulab jamun saw about 4.5 million orders, showing that Indian sweets still hold their place, especially during festivals and family occasions.
Snack-Time Choices Tell Their Own Story
Some foods didn't crack the official top rankings but silently clocked impressive numbers during snack hours. Chicken rolls reached 4.1 million orders, while chicken nuggets followed with 2.9 million. Also Swiggy users ordered around 2.9 million cups of adrak chai during snack-time alone in 2025, often paired with samosas. It's a reminder that even with endless food options, the evening chai break remains non-negotiable for many.
What This Year's Orders Really Say
Put together, Swiggy's 2025 data shows a year driven by familiarity. People experimented, but they didn't abandon their favourites. Hearty meals like biryani dominated, global fast food stayed reliable, regional staples held steady, and desserts leaned towards both celebration and comfort. It was about knowing exactly what would hit the spot when the day felt long.
Wrapping Up the Year, One Order At A Time
As 2025 comes to an end, this food list feels less like a ranking and more like a snapshot of everyday life. Busy schedules, small celebrations, skipped cooking days, and shared meals at home, all reflected in what showed up on our screens. If this year proved anything, it's that when the year winds down, our food choices don't need reinvention. Sometimes, they just need to arrive warm, on time, and exactly as expected.
