Harrods - Creates a customer experience
Harrods is the most famous departmental store in the world. This legendary store is situated in London, which has remained city's chief retail outlet for over 155 years. It covers 1.2 million square feet of retail space and 330 different departments and a staff of around 4000. It stands with a motto "All Things, For All People, Everywhere".
The journey started from the year 1834 in London's East End, by an English merchant Charles Henry Harrod. The shop sold groceries with special interest in tea and had earnings of 20 pounds per week. In 1860 Charles Digby Harrod, son of Charles took over the business who expanded the Harrods into a prestigious departmental store. He increased the turnover to 1000 pounds per week with a staff of sixteen. At the later years he increased the trade by introducing his own brand of groceries, medicines, perfumes, stationery, fruit and vegetables. In the year 1889 the store become a public company with new departments added including the Harrods Bank and Estate agency. They were first to introduce the escalator in 1898 to provide luxurious experience to the customers.
The customers in the world could buy anything in the world ranging from an alligator, and baby elephant to aeroplanes and first television sets. The clients could hire a fully equipped ambulance with a nurse in the 1940s.
During the post war period Harrods suffered, as not much money was being spent. In 1959 it had to step down and the House of Fraser group took the charge. They upgraded the store with the swinging young boutique, Perfumery Hall and Cosmetics Hall.
The stores fortune began to soar after the store was acquired by the Fayed family by 615 million pounds in 1985. It took Mohamed Al-Fayed 300 million pounds to restore Harrods. He initiated Egyptian Escalator designed by the experts from British Museum. Harrods upgraded itself with Europe's largest health and beauty salon, sports, marble clad rooms of luxury accessories.
Recently Harrods hosted a promotion called 'Anything is Possible', one among which is a fairy tale wedding for two pooches with all the ceremonies. It has varied range of products from hampers, beauty, toys, clothing, games, accessories, toiletries, food and wine, homewares...etc. It also facilitates in-store services whether interior designing or massage after a work out. 28 restaurants over 7 floors offer a variety of freshly made cream cake, fresh oysters, champagne..etc.
Ask for it and its there.
Harrods group of companies includes Harrods bank, Harrods Estate, Harrods Casino, Harrods Aviation and Air Harrods, apart from the store.
Today Harrods is a tourist attraction. It is included in the itinerary of the tourist's visit guide. From the start Harrods has been able to meet the customers expectation with satisfaction and great experience.
