Indian Environment-Editorial

India! The country of rich heritage and culture. Many rivers run through the heart of the country to nourish the land. Who will not bow their head in reverence when they see the mighty long spreaded deserts and deltas make the country a meeting ground for the boons of nature. Surprisingly, these long boasted glories are gripping out from India. Understand the major environmental issues in India.

Urbanization and industrialization has contributed much to the pollution of Indian rivers. The mighty rivers like Brahmaputra, Ganga, Krishna, Yamuna and Cauvery are restricted to black stream lines at industrialized areas. The widespread sand mining leaves the sand bed of many stream lines to expose clay. Many water resources breathed their last owing credit to the exposed pollution from the factories on their banks.

India's industrial development contributed largely to the economic growth of the country. However it also lead to the major environmental crisis also. The overcrowded cities accelerated India's air pollution in many forms as vehicle emissions and untreated industrial smoke. Air pollution becomes a serious environmental issue since Indian cities are unable to implement adequate pollution control mechanisms.

India's ongoing population created a greater strain on the mighty mountains of the land. The stimulated deforestation and the destruction of wildlife brought out a real change to the country's seasons itself. The unseen aspects of soil erosion are bringing out famine as well as the lack of energy resources in the country. Not only that the largely chemical exposed soil fail to provide a fruitful result at many parts of India.

India has also contributed much to the world environment crisis through two nuclear tests (Smiling Buddha in 1974 and Operation Shakti in 1998) at Pokhran. The scientists who performed these tests were hailed as national heroes and India claimed to achieve a power in the world. However the negative effects the explosions have contributed to the environment remain unnoticed.

What is the way out from this grinding problem for Indian environment? It is an astonishing factor that India has the applicable sources for renewable energy in the form of solar, wind and hydro power electricity. If used properly these sources will save India from the destruction of nature. Simultaneously, these energy sources reduces the air pollution in metropolis also. When adequate plans can be made by each Indian citizen as well as the insightful industrialists, Indian environment will be saved in the near future.

Afterthought: This may be an illustration of the same story that you have listened from your primary classes. But, pause for a moment! This is about the soil that you walk on, air you breath and water that you drink. You may have the habit of taking resolutions on each important day of your life. So, why not take a resolution on this World Environment Day (June 5) to save the environment that you.
