A blackout is a temporary loss of consciousness. It is called a blackout because your eyesight starts dimming and you can see only blackness as you faint. The reasons for blackout can be anything. It can be something as simple as an acid attack and also as serious as a blood clot in the brain. It is however important to establish the medical causes for a blackout.
The causes of fainting vary from person to person and depend on the situation he/she is in. For example, blackouts during pregnancy are very common. But if you are not pregnant or sick, a blackout can be a cause of worry. Sometimes, losing consciousness might be treated as a symptom of some health problem. That is why the medical causes of blackouts have to be established just to ensure that you are not seriously ill.
The reasons for having a blackout could be that your blood sugar level falls suddenly or you get dehydrated. Sometimes, you can lose consciousness even when you are going to have a heart attack. The following is a list of medical reasons for having blackouts. So if you have had a ‘blackout' experience lately, you could try and see which symptoms your case fits into.

Fall In Blood Sugar Level
When you blood sugar level falls suddenly, you can have a blackout. This usually happens to diabetic patients in many cases. When a diabetic person does not eat for a long period of time, he or she might have low blood sugar.

Fall In Blood Pressure

During Pregnancy
During pregnancy, you are prone to hormonal hyperactivity. This is one of the reasons for fainting. Pregnancy is also a time for very high metabolism. So if you do not eat enough for two, you can have a fall in blood pressure that causes you to lose consciousness.

Problem Of Blood Circulation
Sometimes, if you are having a problem of blood circulation, the blood starts pooling in your legs. As a result, the blood supply to the brain is cut off and you faint. This could also mean that you have a blockage in your blood vessels.

Psychogenic Attack
The racing hormones of your teens can make you have psychogenic attacks of fainting. This is usually precipitated by stress, anxiety and depression.

Heart Attack
Sometimes, you can pass out just when you are having a heart attack. It can also happen that your heart stops working for a few seconds during this time.

Anemia
When you have less red blood cells in your body to carry oxygen to the brain, you can pass out due to weakness. This happens due to iron deficiency and is common among women.
