Strange Causes of Cancer
By now, most of us are familiar with at least a few triggers of cancer. Smoking, unhealthy diets and radiations are some of the most talked about causes of cancer. Cancer can be attributed to environmental factors and unhealthy lifestyle choices. But there are numerous other little known factors that can lead to cancer.
The best way to avoid cancer is by prevention and awareness. More and more items that we come into contact on a daily basis are being accused of causing cancer. While all the claims might not be grounded in fact, it is always better to be safe than sorry.
Here are some of the strange and lesser known causes of cancer.
Air
Fresheners
A
study
published
by
The
Journal
of
the
Federation
of
American
Societies
for
Experimental
Biology
in
2012
claimed
that
phthalates,
usually
found
in
air
fresheners
helped
accelerate
the
growth
of
cancer.
The
growth
of
cancer
is
accelerated
by
constant
exposure
to
phthalates.
Instead
of
using
air
fresheners,
light
scented
candles
to
bring
sophistication
and
fragrance
to
your
room.
Indoor
Tanning
Tanning
using
indoor
tanning
beds
has
been
found
to
be
hazardous
for
young
adults.
Those
who
use
tanning
beds
before
the
age
of
30
have
been
found
to
increase
their
risk
of
contracting
melanoma
by
75
percent.
Melanoma
is
one
of
the
deadliest
forms
of
skin
cancer.
So
make
sure
you
catch
your
"rays" the
old-fashioned
way.
Birth
Control
Pills
Women
who
use
oral
contraceptives
were
found
to
have
a
higher
risk
of
contracting
oral
cancer
than
those
who
do
not
use
them.
But
once
you
stop
taking
Birth
Control
Pills,
the
risk
of
cancer
is
eliminated.
This
is
due
to
the
fact
that
oral
contraceptives
cause
hormonal
imbalances.
Alternate
forms
of
contraception
can
be
considered
to
reduce
the
risk
of
cancer.
Working
Late
It
has
been
found
that
women
who
take
on
late
night
shifts
have
a
higher
chance
of
contracting
cancer
than
those
who
stay
at
home.
This
does
not
even
have
to
be
regular,
even
working
a
night
shift
for
3
nights
can
give
you
cancer.
So
cut
back
on
the
late
nights
and
catch
up
on
your
sleep
during
the
day
and
take
supplements
if
you
do
not.
Mouthwash
Studies
have
shown
that
mouthwash
contains
ethanol,
which
is
linked
with
oral
cancer.
It
breaks
down
the
tissues
inside
the
mouth,
making
you
susceptible
to
carcinogens
like
those
present
in
cigarettes.
Bras
A
book
was
published
in
1995
by
a
husband
and
wife
duo
of
medical
anthropologists,
claiming
that
wearing
bras
caused
breast
cancer.
Although
this
link
has
never
been
proved,
scientists
say
that
women
who
go
without
bras
have
less
dense
muscle
tissue
which
reduces
the
risk
of
breast
cancer.
These strange causes of cancer are certainly surprising. But then again, anything you touch these days seems to give you cancer.
