Green Gym For Better Environment

By Staff

Mother Nature not only blessed us with different terrains to challenge our fitness, strength, endurance, balance, skill and co-ordination but also the weather systems that add to the physiological benefits to your body, mind and soul. The Green Gym is a distinctive exercise group which aims to promote health, fitness and well being through physical work whilst improving the local environment. Its an outdoor alternative to conventional gyms, the opportunity to increase their physical activity levels through direct involvement in practical conservation activities.

Anyone can join in the green sessions, and children under 16 accompanied by an adult can also join. Each of the group member will be provided with child sized tools. Sessions run during the week and at weekends, and one can join in for as much or as little of the session as they like. There are usually a number of different activities during each session, so one is able to start off by way of a gentle task and build up to something more strenuous thereafter.

The group believe that local people must be involved in order for environmental improvements to be sustainable. The Green Gym engages communities in identifying the problems and solutions. Providing the appropriate support and training, the Green Gym equips people with knowledge, skills and confidence to achieve their vision of a better environment. The broad goals underpinning this approach include tackling social exclusion, tackling inequalities in health and social wellbeing and creating environments that will help people maintain good health and wellbeing.

Health benefits for people who attend Green Gym sessions regularly are numerous. The members found significant improvement in cardiovascular fitness and improved muscular strength provided they are performed on regular basis. Almost a third more calories can be burnt in an hour of some Green Gym activities than in doing a step aerobics class. The Green Gym is viewed by participants as being beneficial to their mental health and wellbeing.
