The Danger Triangle : The Face Area You Should Never Pop Pimples At Any Cost
Life is full of small temptations that seem harmless like hitting snooze one more time when it's time to wake up for work in the morning, scrolling endlessly when you have to get some good night's sleep. It feels satisfying at the moment, but sometimes, those tiny actions can have hidden consequences we don't realise until later.
Just like that, are you one of those who sees your pimples and pops them on an instinct? It might seem like you're fixing the problem, but certain areas on your face carry an unexpected risk, making a quick pop potentially dangerous. There's one spot, in particular, where this habit could lead to more than just a mark on your skin.
What is The Danger Triangle?
Popping acne in the "danger triangle" of your face around your nose and mouth might seem harmless, but it can actually lead to some serious issues. This area is linked to your brain, and an infection could cause a dangerous blood clot called cavernous sinus thrombosis (CST).
Though rare, CST can mess with blood flow to your brain and even be life-threatening. That's why dermatologists recommend skipping the pimple-popping habit, especially in that area. It's better to leave it alone and treat your acne the right way.
How To Visualise The Danger Triangle
The term "triangle of death" is used to refer to what experts now call the "danger triangle" on your face. It's the area from the bridge of your nose down to the corners of your mouth, which is considered risky because of how closely it's connected to your brain.
To visualise it, try using your fingers: place your thumbs at the bridge of your nose to form the top of the triangle, and then stretch your pointer fingers from the corners of your mouth to create the base, extending across the bottom of your upper lip.
The Risk Lurking Behind The Danger Triangle
The term "danger triangle" might sound a bit dramatic when it comes to popping pimples, but it's definitely important to be careful around that area of your face. Picking at or scratching pimples there can let bacteria in, leading to infection.
And since this part of your face is close to your brain, an infection could cause serious issues. Overall, the American Academy of Dermatology advises against popping pimples in general. It can push the pimple deeper into your skin, causing scarring and making your acne worse.
Is Popping A Pimple In The Danger Triangle Life-Threatening?
Well, don't freak out, the chances are super slim, but technically, yes, it's possible though really rare. If an infection spreads from your face, it could lead to septic cavernous sinus thrombosis, a blood clot near your brain.
This can cause serious health problems like brain abscesses, brain infections, nerve damage (including eye muscle paralysis), meningitis, pneumonia, or even a stroke. While septic cavernous sinus thrombosis is considered fatal it's treatable now with antibiotics if caught early and can really reduce the risk of complications and even death.
Some signs to watch out for include a fever, headache, paralysis of the muscles that control your eye movements, and swelling around the eyes. If you notice any of these symptoms, it's important to get medical help right away.
Should You Pop Pimples?
It's tempting, but touching your face a lot especially with unwashed hands can actually make acne worse. When you pop pimples, you push bacteria, dead skin cells, and oil deeper into your skin, causing more swelling and redness. This can make your acne more painful and noticeable.
Moreover, popping pimples can lead to scabs, and as your skin heals, you might end up with scars or dark spots. These spots, called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, can take a long time to fade, sometimes up to a year, and in some cases, they could even be permanent.
Popping pimples might feel satisfying, but it's not worth the risk, especially in the "danger triangle" area of your face. Squeezing pimples there can lead to serious infections that could spread to your brain or bloodstream. Even if you pop pimples elsewhere, it can make your acne worse and cause scarring.
Instead, try using over-the-counter acne treatments, stick to a good skincare routine, and avoid touching your face. If your acne doesn't improve, or if it's causing emotional stress, it's a good idea to seek professional help from a dermatologist.
