Does Your Urine Smell Like Ammonia? Here Are The Reasons!
High levels of waste products and toxins in your urine is the major reason for bad smell. Read on to know why you must consult a doctor if your urine smells like ammonia!
At times, your urine may smell like ammonia. But why does that happen? Well, high levels of waste products and toxins in your urine is the major reason for that smell.
Your diet, drinking habits and even infections could make your urine smell like ammonia. Of course, if it smells like that for a day or two, you don't need to lose your sleep over it. But if the smell doesn't go away, then rush to the doctor immediately.

Certain medical conditions could be the reason behind the smell of ammonia in the urine. What are they? Are they serious? Read on to know.

Dehydration
In some cases, dehydration could be the reason. If that is the case, drinking enough water can solve the problem. When waste materials are diluted, the smell of ammonia goes away.
Urine is composed mainly of water. Apart from that, salt and certain chemicals are also present in it. When those chemicals are in concentrated form, urine smells like ammonia.

Diabetes
Even diabetes can cause the smell. Diabetes could result in accumulation of ketones in the liver which could make the urine smell like ammonia.

Kidney Stones
Even kidney stones could be the reason. Those who suffer bladder stones tend to experience this problem regularly.

Liver Disease
Liver infection can also cause the smell. When the liver fails to remove toxins, higher levels of ammonia may build up the urine and make it smell like that.

Diet
Some foods and certain medications could also be the reason for that smell. If you have been eating asparagus repeatedly for a couple of days, your urine may smell like ammonia.
Also, if your diet contains vitamin B6, it could also cause the smell. Even a protein rich diet can make your urine smelly.

Kidney Disease
Your kidneys work hard in controlling the levels of ammonia in the urine. When kidneys are weak or when the urine is too acidic, the smell tends to be too strong.

Urinary Tract Infection
Even UTI can also make the urine smell bad. The smell could be due to the bacteria that infect the bladder. When bacteria gets into the urinary tract, urine becomes smelly.

Pregnancy
In some pregnant women, the problem of smelly urine could occur. But again, it could be due to urinary tract infections that occur during pregnancy.
