Each is used for a specific reason and there is a rule that the puja plate should have all the prescribed ingredients which should be used in turn during the puja.

kalash

Surprised what use the water kalash serves in the puja room? If you observe the activities in the puja room with a keener eye, you will be able to see the message behind this act.

Every courtyard is adorned with a Tulasi Plant that is used for puja and also for several other health conditions as medicine.

Water in the puja room has the same significance and importance. Let us see what purpose does the kalash of water serve here in the puja room.

Varuna: The Garuda bell has a presence of Lord Vishnu in it and is extremely auspicious to use it while worshipping.

Like Garuda, Lord Varuna represents water which is his abode. Water has to be worshipped as it is representative of Varuna and hence it is placed in the puja room.

Tulsi water: Some people do achamana during their sandhyavandan process in puja room in the morning, afternoon and evening during sandhya kalam.

So they place a few Tulasi leaves in the water kalash so that the water is sanctified and achamana that is performed will bear positive results. The puja mandir also gets purified as a result.

Sanctity: Before we begin the puja, we need to sanctify the puja mandir by sprinkling water over the deity and the place where you worship. This is one of the reasons why we need to have a kalash of water handy in puja room.

Puja Procedure: During the shodashopachara puja to God during worship, we give a particular offering to God which is called Toyam after phalam, and pushpam. They say "Pushpam samarpayami. Phalam Samarpayami and finally Toyam samarpayami,"

Here samarpayami means " I offer or submit". Toyam samarpayami means " I offer water( teertham)". Offering water is a mandatory part of puja. Hence a kalash of water is kept ready in puja mandir.

Prasadam: Naivedya is an important offering that is given to God at the end of the worship. This means God consumes the essence of this and leaves the sanctified food for us to consume.

The sanctified food has its own positive effects on us. It also has its own divine taste that we cannot get to experience in the normal day to day food.

You must have seen in temples, the kind of prasad they distribute. It is just heavenly not only because of the culinary skills of the temple cooks, but due to that special something that sanctifies the prasad at the time we offer it to God.

Without offering Naivedya, there is no way we can experience the divine blessings in a concrete way. Panchamrit, fruits, and sweets are offered usually as naivedya. After offering naivedya we must keep the water ready for the deity to use this water to drink

Aarti: We need water to sprinkle the aarti plate with, while performing Aarti. Then water is sprinkled in all four directions and on every one present around you. This is the reason why water needs to be there in a kalash in the puja room.
