As per the ancient tradition, our elders used to say that aarti should not be received with empty hands and as a mark of respect and reverence, some money should be placed in the aarti plate. There are three main reasons for this,.

The first reason: As per Gita, it is the duty of a human being to donate. Find a suitable time and person to donate. Do not expect anything in return for donating. This is called sattvic daan. Giving something does not hurt us.

It only builds on the reservoir of good will and punya. Priests spend their entire day at the temple chanting mantras, with devotion. They do the puja not for their own good.

You must have heard them utter while worshipping " sarve janah sukhino bhavanthu." It means let every one be happy. This clearly showcases selflessness. So when someone does a good turn, that should be reciprocated and appreciated.

The Second reason: It is not only about the devotion. It is also about sustenance of their families. They subsist only on the contributions made by the devotees on the aarti plate.

They have a family to fend for and have no other sources of income. Hence for this reason, we have continued this practice that helps others survive too.

The third reason: Earlier on, the money collected from the Aarti plate was spent for the service of the Gomata. Gaushalas were run and cows were served.

Hence aarti money really helped cows live an acceptably comfortable life.. Many temples and gaushalas have cows that are taken care of using the money that was collected on the Aarti plate. Next time you put money on the aarti plate, remember above these thoughts.
