Where Is The Prison Cell Where Krishna Incarnated?
Centred on the prison cell, where Krishnas Parents were imprisoned, by the demon Kamsa, Shri Krishna Janmasthana temple attracts the devotees with its features and some more temples built inside the premises. The sacred holy atmosphere that pervades the temple, is enough to provide proof that Lord Krishna was definitely born here.

The Krishna Janmasthan Temple is very crowded during festivals of Janmashtami, Basant Panchami, Holi, and Diwali. This prison temple is located at Deeg Marg, Near Deeg Gate Chauraha, Mathura.
Legends
Krishna Janmabhoomi is so lifelike and real that it holds people enthralled with just a view of it. The demon king Kamsa who was also the maternal uncle of Krishna, ruled Mathura. One day an oracular voice told him that his death was imminent and that too at the hands of Devaki's eighth child. This was the reason why he imprisoned both Vasudeva and Devaki in this jail just to be able to kill all her children one by one. Devaki gave birth to Krishna at the odd hours of midnight and a miracle happened at this time. All doors and gates of the prison opened by themselves and Vasudeva was able to carry the infant Krishna in a basket, cross the Yamuna river, and reach the Nand Gokula to entrust him to Yashoda to take care of him and bring him up.
How This Temple Was Built And Rebuilt
Historically the Sri Krishna Janmasthan was built nearly 5000 years ago by Krishna's great-grandson, Vajranabha. It was reconstructed around 400 AD by Chandragupta Vikramaditya and again destroyed in 1017 AD. Raja Dhurpet Dev Janjua, rebuilt the temple in 1150 AD. Again it was razed down by Sikandar Lodi, in 16th century. Raja Veer Singh Bundela rebuilt it during the reign of Jahangir 125 years later. Aurangzeb demolished again In 1669 AD and built a masjid on it. Britishers, when they took over, auctioned the temple.
Madan Mohan Malviya decided to rebuild the temple and founded 'Sri Krishna Janma Bhoomi Trust. He took the janma bhoomi land from Raja Krishna das of Banaras. This inspired famous figures in the world of business, to form a committee for safeguarding, renovating and saving of Krishna's most important monument. Finally, the temple was completed in 1965 also due to people's contributions and help. There are several structures that are constructed inside the premises of the temple complex.
Structures Inside
Keshavdev temple, the Garbha Griha shrine, and the Bhagavata Bhavan are the three shrines that are housed inside the shri Krishna Janmasthan temple
Keshav Dev Temple
Keshav Dev Temple was built by Ramakrishna Dalmia, the construction of which was publicly dedicated in 1958.
Garbha Gruha Shrine Or The Prison Cell Sanctum Sanctorum
The Garbha Gruha consists exactly of what we wish to see here-the prison cell where Krishna was born. There is a marble pavilion and an underground prison cell with a verandah to sit. Yoga Maya temple can be found at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum. Legend says that both Vasudeva and Devaki were imprisoned by Kamsa, the king of Mathura. He had a reason in imprisoning them as an oracle informed him that he will be killed by his sister's child. The temple is above this prison. The prison cell has been totally transformed into a magnificent looking shrine which shares a common wall with a mosque on the adjacent side and devotees have to go through a security check here. Not just this, the remnants found in the ancient prison cell have been discovered by excavating the place. Utensils, old statues and a rock slab have been unearthed. Near the main temple, there is a museum which houses these artifacts.
Bhagavat Bhavan
Bhagavat Bhavan is built in honour of Srimad Bhagavatha in 1965. There are six foot statues of Radha and Krishna, with Balarma, Subhadra and Jagannath shrines on the right, Ram Lakshman Sita on the left, Garuda Kambha, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Hanuman, Durga and a temple dedicated to Shiva Linga, inside the Bhagavat Bhavan. Paintings or Krishna and his disciples, and inscriptions of Bhagavad Geetha can be found adorning the walls of the temple. These temples for various deities are also found inside the temple.
Potra Kund
Potra Kund or Pavitra Kund, is a deep water tank towards the southeast of the Janmasthan. It was where Krishna was given his first bath after birth. Mahadji Scindia constructed staircase for the tank in 1782.
Lakhs of devotees visit the temple during Janmashtami. Janmashtami celebrations always begin in the midnight, which is exactly when Krishna took his birth. Apart from this, Holi and Diwali are also celebrated here with equal enthusiasm and pomp.
