When Is Onam Starting In 2023? How To Prepare For Onam Celebrations?
Onam is a vibrant and joyous festival celebrated in the southern state of Kerala, India. It marks the homecoming of King Mahabali, a mythical ruler who is believed to visit his people during this time.

The festivities last for ten days and are filled with cultural performances, feasts, and various traditional rituals. This year the festival will begin on 20 August and continue till 31 August 2023. Let us know how one can prepare for Onam celebrations.

1. Cleaning And Preparing Home
To prepare for Onam, start by thoroughly cleaning your house. Sweep away negativity and create a fresh atmosphere. Decorate your entrance with beautiful flower rangolis called 'Pookalam.' These intricate designs made from colorful petals will welcome King Mahabali into your home.

2. Traditional Attire
Wearing traditional attire adds charm to the celebrations. Men can wear the classic white dhoti paired with a colorful silk shirt known as 'Mundu.' Women look stunning in 'Kasavu' sarees-off-white sarees with golden borders. Don't forget to enhance your look with traditional jewelry!

4. Performing Traditional Onam Dances
Onam celebrations are incomplete without energetic folk dances like 'Thiruvathira' and 'Pulikali.' Gather your friends and family to learn these graceful movements. Dress up in vibrant costumes for the Pulikali-a dance where performers paint themselves as tigers! These performances add color and liveliness to the festivities.

5. Exchanging Gifts and Onakkodi Tradition
During Onam, it is customary to exchange gifts with loved ones. Known as 'Onakkodi,' this tradition symbolizes love and affection. Surprise your family and friends with thoughtful presents such as clothes, sweets, or small tokens that bring joy. The act of giving strengthens bonds and spreads happiness.
As you prepare for Onam celebrations, remember that it is more than just a festival-it is an opportunity to connect with your roots, cherish traditions, and create lasting memories with loved ones. Embrace the spirit of Onam, immerse yourself in the festivities, and let joy and positivity fill your heart.
