Kartik Purnima 2023: Legend
According to a legend, the term is derived from a word that comes from Tripurari, a form of the God Shiva and an enemy of the demon Tripurasura, the ogre. It is on Kartik Purnima, that Lord Shiva killed the demon with a single arrow.

Tripurasuraa is a collective name given to three demons namely Vidyunmali, Tarakaksha, and Viryavana who controlled the whole world after defeating the gods and created three cities in space, called Tripura. Therefore, this day is also known as Dev-Deepavali or Diwali for the gods.

According to another legend, this is known as the day of Matsya, or the fish-incarnation of Lord Vishnu, as well as the birth date of Vrinda, the personification of Mother Tulsi. There is a belief that Lord Kartikeya, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, was also born on this day. Due to this, devotees of Radha and Krishna believe that on Kartik Purnima, the gods gather to dance and celebrate the festival of illumination. Since it is a festival of light, they light lamps in their homes and temples and also donate lamps to symbolize the virtue of goodness over evil or darkness. Also, it is a symbolic gesture of dispelling ignorance and spreading knowledge.

One should not consume non-vegetarian food such as chicken, meat, alcohol, etc. on this auspicious day of Kartik Purnima as it is not going to give the desired results. So, refrain from Tamasic food at all costs.

Further, Charity and acts of kindness are considered auspicious on Kartik Purnima and so many people engage in donating to the needy, feeding the poor, or supporting various social causes.
