According to popular legends, there was a demon named Tripurasura. Tripurasura was the son of demon Tarakasura who performed penance for Lord Brahma. After performing penance for a long time, Lord Brahma was pleased and got the boon of not being defeated by the gods. After getting the boon of Lord Brahma, Tripurasura started creating terror. There was an uproar in all three worlds.

Tripurasura attacked heaven. Seeing this, the heavenly gods came to Lord Brahma and told him that it was I who had given him the boon. Only Lord Shiva can help us in escaping the terror of Tripurasura. Then all the gods reached Bholenath and narrated their plight to him.

Lord Shiva killed Tripurasura and freed the gods from his wrath. On this happy occasion, all the gods reached Kashi, the city of Shiva and celebrated the festival by lighting lamps.
