1. August 14, 2023, Monday- Leaped Fourth Shravan Somwar Vrat, Adhika Masik Shivaratri

  • Leaped Fourth Shravan Somwar Vrat- In Shravan month, devotees worship Lord Shiva every Monday or Somwar to get his blessings. Along with fasting, prayers and pujas are done to remove please Bholenath and remove obstacles from one's life. This day is special for married women who are looking for conjugal bliss and also for unmarried women looking for desired life partners.
  • Adhika Masik Shivaratri- Adhik Maas is the extra month, according to the Hindu Lunar Calendar and it is considered highly auspicious for religious activities. When Shivratri is observed in this month, it is known as Adhika Masik Shivratri.

2. August 15, 2023, Tuesday- Leaped Fifth Shravan Mangala Gauri Vrat, Aadi Amavasai, Independence Day, Adhika Darsha Amavasya

  • Leaped Fifth Shravan Mangala Gauri Vrat- In Shravan month, along with Lord Shiva, his consort, Goddess Gauri is also worshipped. Therefore, women worship and keep fast for this deity in the belief that it will fetch them conjugal bliss and prosperity. The vrat is observed on Tuesdays of the Sawan month which validates the name.

  • Aadi Amavasai- Aadi Amavasya or Amavasai is the new moon day that falls during the Tamil month of Adi and it is one of the three most powerful New Moon days to offer Tarpanam (ancestral rituals) to honour one's ancestors and receive their eternal blessings.

  • Adhika Darsha Amavasya- This is a rare occurrence in the Hindu Calendar and people come together to mark this day by paying tribute to their ancestors and honouring them by organising puja and engaging in rituals. Also, people seek blessings to achieve spiritual wisdom.

  • Independence Day- This year marks the 77th Independence Day of India from the 200-year-old oppressive British rule. It is a national holiday in India and people celebrate the sacrifice of heroes who gave this nation its freedom.

3. August 16, 2023, Wednesday-Shravana Adhika Maas Ends, Shravana Adhika Amavasya, Anvadhan

  • Shravana Adhika Maas Ends- Adhika Maas in Shravan month is a rare coincidence that has happened after 19 years. Shravan is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Adhika Maas is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, therefore, devotees pray, worship and fast to get blessings from both deities. It will end on 16 August 2023.

  • Shravana Adhika Amavasya- It is New Moon or Amavasya during Adhika Maas in Shravan. This day is dedicated to Lord Shiva and divine feminine energy and is considered highly auspicious. People observe this day with utmost devotion.

  • Anvadhan- One of the significant events of the Hindu calendar, this day is special for Vaishnavites as they observe fast all day long on this day. On this day, the ritual of adding fuel to ensure the fire of yajna (havan) remains burning. This happens after performing a fire sacrifice ceremony known as Agnihotra.

4. August 17, 2023, Thursday- Simha Sankranti, Malayalam New Year (First Day of Chingham Masam), Chandra Darshana, Ishti

  • Simha Sankranti- This is the day when the Sun transits from Cancer zodiac sign to Leo and is a very significant day in Southern parts of India. It also marks the beginning of the Simha month. It marks the beginning of the Malayalam Calendar in Kerala.

  • Malayalam New Year (First Day of Chingam Masam)- Chingam is the first month of the Malayalam calendar, according to the Kollavasham system. The new year starts from the first of the Malayalam month of Chingam.

  • Chandra Darshana- It is referred to as the observance of sighting the moon after the Amavasya (the new moon) or no moon day.

  • Ishti- To get the blessings of Lord Vishnu, devotees worship him in order to get happiness, prosperity and peace. The Vaishnavites are the ones who follow this with complete devotion. The term 'Ishti' means desire and in the broader sense it means to do something to invoke a deity to obtain something.

  • Hariyali Teej- This is also known as Green Teej and is celebrated by married and unmarried women. This day holds cultural as well as religious significance and is observed on the third day of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the Hindu month of Shravan.

6. August 20, 2023, Sunday- Vinayaka Chaturthi

  • Vinayaka Chaturthi- This day celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha or the elephant-headed God in Hinduism. The festival typically falls on the fourth day of the Hindu lunar month of Bhadrapada.
