Want Success In Exams And Career? Rely On This Mantra To Help You
Lord Shiva is viewed as God everywhere and worshipped in temples either as Lord Shiva or in the form of a lingam. The Panchabhottasthalams, which are the most important places of Shiva Pilgrimage display his Linga akara as well as his form.

However, Lord shiva is also called Jagadguru and not just Parameswara and Shankara. He also has this guru avatar or form of him where he is revered and worshipped as Guru. Hence, he is equally powerful and bestows wisdom and knowledge apart from the other boons that he grants. The Jagadguru avatar expresses his supremely knowledgeable side and shows up Lord Shiva to be a Guru for Yoga, Music, Wisdom and knowledge of Shastras. He is known as Lord Dakshinamurthi.
Why Is He Called Dakshinamurti?
Now the question would be "why was he named Dakshinamurti and has Dakshina got to do anything with it?'. Dakshinamurti when translated literally means 'the God who faces south direction." South is supposed the direction of Yama, and almost in every temple we see the stone image of Dakshinamurti installed in the south direction. No other god faces the south. In every Shiva temple, you find the Idol of Dakshinamurti on the south wall.

Significance
Guru personifies wisdom and occupies a position next to that of parents in a student's life and acharya devo bhava is an oft heard statement in the knowledgeable circle. Dakshina Murthy, dispels the darkness of ignorance.
He holds his fingers in the jnana mudra which actually is formed when your thumb touches the index finger in a particular manner. Here the thumb is God and index finger is likened to man while the remaining three fingers represent the three predominant weaknesses of man, namely arrogance, illusion, and previous bad karma. These are the impurities that hold you back from reaching the supreme.
The Abhaya mudra shows that his grace is always upon the students. The rosary in his hands signifies tantric knowledge and the fire displays illumination of senses by wisdom and removal of the ignorance. Thursday is revered as the day of the Guru, and many people worship Shri Raghavendra Swamy, Shirdi Sai Baba, and Gondavalekar Maharaj on this day as they were Masters of Spirituality.
Thursdays are the days we normally start our educational ventures. On this day, Special worship is offered to Dakshinamurthy in Shaivaite temples. Gurupoornima is the day Dakshinamurthi is offered special pujas and homas that will benefit the devotees as well.
