In villages, towns and cities, around this time, you can see women praying near the Banyan tree with puja ingredients and doing pradakshina, wrapping the tree at the same time with Raksha sutra or raw yarns.

This is the festival of Vat Savitri which is an indispensable part of our annual celebrations, of festivals. It is majorly a woman predominated festival celebrated by women for extending the longevity of their partners.

Vat Savitri is on 19 May 2023. Banyan tree is of prime importance in the puja. Vat Savitri Vrat occurs annually on the Jyestha Amavasya. Vat Savritri fast also ensures good fortune for women. Udaya Tithi is observed on Friday, 19 May 2023. Jyeshtha Amavasya begins on 18 May 2023, at 09.42 pm. Jyeshtha Amavasya concludes on 19 May, 2023, at 09.22 pm.

Vat Savitri Vrat 2023: Puja Rituals: Wake up in the morning, take a ritualistic bath, wear fresh new clothes. Springle Ganga Jal around the tree.

Fill whole grains in a basket made of bamboo and place brahma, Savitri and satyavan idols on the top of this grain basket. Savitri's idol should be on the left of brahma and Satyavans on the right.

Pour water to the roots of the banyan tree and worship it with fruits, flowers, gram dal, yarn, akshat, dhoop, diya Kumkum etc. Invoke Savitri and Tridev by chanting this mantra: Brahmana Sahinta Devi Savitri Lokmataram. Satyavratam Ch Savitri Yama Chavahayamyaham.

Then chant this as well. Chant this mantra: Saubhagyadravya Samyukta Savitri Pratigraharatam.Offer chamar service to Satyavan Savitri with a bamboo fan and place a banyan leaf in your hair.

Sitting under the banyan tree, listen to the vrat katha of Savitri and Satyavan. Wish for a long and steady marital life and go around the Banyan tree thrice holding a thread of yarn.

You can ambulate like this for 5, 11, 21, 51 or 108 times. Result would get better with the number of Parikramas. After parikrama, place the puja ingredients in a bamboo leaf and donate it to a brahmin.

Take the bamboo fan home and fan your husband with it so that it will have auspicious effects on him as well. Then consume the prasad immediately and sweets in the evening. Donate the puja ingredients and fruits of Suhaag to 11 married women.

Vat Savitri Vrat 2023: Rules To Follow During The Vrat: Husband and wife should stay in absolute harmony and not mistreat each other. Do not cheat any one or commit any sin ( to the extent possible) as fasting should accompany pure thoughts, words and deeds.

Don't disregard or disrespect someone even in your thoughts as the outcome would be affected. Do not wear shades of black, blue and white in your attire or even bands or bangles of this colour on your hands and head.

Do not get your hair cut or eat tamasic food. This is for ladies. On the day of Vat Savitri, women should avoid eating tamasic food. While worshipping the Banyan tree, pray for the long life of husband and children. Wrap the yarn around the tree for seven times.

While doing the parana, break the fast with soaked gram..While fasting observe celibacy. To be consistently lucky, you must be decked in sixteen adornments this day. You can pick either red, or yellow or green coloured attire to wear for the puja.

Shani Jayanti and vat Savitri vrat are coinciding on this day, and because Saturn is in Aquarius, Shash mahapurush yoga is formed along with Shobhan yoga which will remain active till 6.17 pm in the evening. Conducting worship during these three yogas will be of great benefit to the worshipper.

Significance of Vat Savitri Vrat: This day was when Savitri claimed her husband's soul back from Yama, the lord of afterlife. He was carrying the soul of Satyavan, her husband, as his life could no more be extended beyond that.

It day was a historically significant day which proclaimed to the world how powerful can true love be and how it can transcend the barriers of time and death. All married women usually take their inspiration from her tale of love and sacrifice.

Banyan tree holds a lot of importance for this day. On this day married women worship the Banyan tree and take 7, 11, 21, 51 or 101 rounds or pradakshinas around it. Women wrap raw yarn around the tree for seven times.
